Mosquitoes start life in water.

That's why managing breeding areas can make a difference.

Where do mosquitoes begin?
Eggs - Laid in or near water (on the surface for some species, on damp container walls just above the waterline for others, like Aedes mosquitoes)
Larva - Lives in water. Feeds and grows.
Pupa – Lives in water. Doesn't feed — this is the resting stage right before adulthood.
Adult - Emerges from water, dries wings, and flies off to reproduce.

Eliminating standing water: Dump it, drain it, flip it, or toss it!
Monitoring water features: Keep ponds, fountains, and birdbaths moving or treated.
Using appropriate mosquito control products where needed:

Products like Mosquito Bits® target mosquito larvae in water.

🍁 Garden Myth: "Gardening season ends after summer."

Reality: Many gardeners consider fall one of the most productive seasons of the year.

September is a great time to plant cool-season vegetables like lettuce, spinach, kale, radishes, and cilantro. Cooler temperatures can help reduce stress on plants while extending your harvest.

Don't Put Away the Birdbath Yet

💧 As birds begin their fall migrations, reliable sources of clean water become especially important.
Many migrating birds stop frequently to rest, drink, and refuel before continuing their journeys.

This month, consider:
✔ Refreshing birdbaths regularly
✔ Cleaning bird feeders
✔ Leaving some seed-producing flowers standing
✔ Maintaining pollinator-friendly habitat

While you're refreshing water features, don't forget to monitor them for mosquito activity.
Every stop along a migration route matters.

Remember:
✔ Check pets for ticks after walks
✔ Keep fresh water available
✔ Monitor for insect activity
✔ Pavement still gets hot in September — watch your pets' paws on the asphalt
✔ Keep outdoor spaces clean

September Garden Checklist

🍂 As summer begins to wind down, now is the perfect time to give your garden a little extra attention.

This month's garden checklist:

✔ Harvest ripe vegetables regularly
✔ Remove diseased plants
✔ Save seeds from your favorite flowers
✔ Add healthy plant debris to your compost pile
✔ Plant cool-season vegetables
✔ Refresh mulch around garden beds

A little work now can help set your garden up for success this fall and next spring. September is also an excellent time to improve soil with compost and organic matter.

What is at the top of your September gardening checklist?

Sunflowers & Goldfinches

🌻 Have you noticed bright yellow birds visiting your sunflowers?

American Goldfinches time their nesting season to coincide with sunflower and thistle seed production.

Goldfinches can perch and feed upside down; house finches cannot! ☺️

As flower heads mature, these cheerful little birds feast on nutritious seeds while helping spread them throughout the landscape.

If you've left your sunflowers standing, you're providing food for wildlife long after the blooms fade.

Sometimes the best garden cleanup... is waiting just a little longer.

Goldenrod 🌼 Myth or Fact?
"Goldenrod causes seasonal allergies."

❌ Myth!
Goldenrod often gets blamed because its bright yellow flowers bloom when allergy season peaks. The real culprit is usually ragweed, whose small green flowers release lightweight pollen that travels easily through the air.

Goldenrod pollen is much heavier and is carried primarily by insects like bees and butterflies. So if you see goldenrod buzzing with pollinators this August, give it some appreciation—it plays an important role in supporting late-season wildlife.
