Monica White spent her career outdoors as a U.S. Forest Service wildlife biologist. She was a runner, equestrian, backpacker, and working mom of two.

Then a tick-borne parasite she never knew was a risk upended everything. It took 7.5 years to get a diagnosis. She left her career and was bedridden, and her husband and kids felt every bit of it.

Today, as President and co-founder of the Colorado Tick-Borne Disease Awareness Association (), Monica is building the resources she couldn’t find: prevention tools ahead of time, and faster access to care.

Where to Go This October: Great Smoky Mountains National Park 🍂

If there's one place to see fall color this month, it's the Great Smokies. Because the park rises from low valleys to peaks over 6,000 feet, the color doesn't arrive all at once. It starts at the high elevations in early October and works its way down the mountainsides toward the end of the month. That gives you weeks of reds, oranges and golds from maples, hickories, sweetgums and sourwoods.

Take a slow drive around Cades Cove, pull over at the overlooks along Newfound Gap Road, or head up to Clingmans Dome for ridge-to-ridge views. If you'd rather walk, trails like Laurel Falls and Alum Cave put you right in the middle of the color. Go on a weekday morning if you can, because October is one of the park's busiest months.

🦟 **Extreme Heat Is Fueling Mosquito Activity in Southern California**

A recent Southern California heat wave is accelerating mosquito development, prompting emergency mosquito-control treatments in Altadena and Monterey Park amid concerns about West Nile virus.

But one important takeaway from the response is worth remembering: **Mosquito control doesn't begin when mosquitoes start biting. It begins in the water.** 💧

Mosquitoes spend their early life stages in standing water, making larval control an important part of reducing mosquito populations before they emerge as biting adults.

That's where Summit's Mosquito Dunks® and Mosquito Bits® can play a role. Both use Bti (*Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis*), a biological larvicide that targets mosquito larvae in water.

🌿 **A few simple steps can make a difference:**
- Empty containers that collect standing water.
- Refresh birdbaths regularly.
- Keep gutters and drainage areas clear.
- Use a labeled mosquito larvicide in standing water that cannot be eliminated.
