Last night, we went to the Pipe Creek Community Association Historical Preservation meeting as a family and it was humbling. Somewhere between the old stories, old buildings, and conversations about what’s been lost, I realized… this is another reason we started DC1.
We’ve always loved old things. Old houses. Old barns. Old furniture. Buying used, thrifting, repurposing and giving things a second life has always been a way we've tried to live.
Matt worked for many different homebuilders over the years. I watched all these guys scorch beautiful ranches, tear down massive old trees, destroy beautiful old buildings because they were simply ‘in the way,’ and change the landscape forever, all in the name of growth.
And honestly, I watched some of Matt's sparkle fade with it.
So we made a promise to ourselves: when we can save what’s already here, we will.
Because construction has a bigger environmental footprint than most people realize. The buildings and construction industry accounts for roughly 37% of global CO₂ emissions and nearly half of the world’s material extraction. And according to the UN, repurposing an existing building can create 50–75% fewer emissions than building new. (UNEP - UN Environment Programme)
That’s why the project we’re working on right now means so much to us.
We’re taking an old house and giving it a new life.
Because at DC1, we want to
Save the character.
Fix what’s broken.
Use what’s already here.
And leave the land when we can.
Because sometimes the best thing you can build… is a way to keep what’s already there. 🤎
