Today, we celebrate the life of a man whose time with us was far too short. The life of a man who had way more to give … to his family, to his hometown, to his hockey community, to everyone involved in the granite industry, and just everyone around him period.
On a professional level - there was no job too big, too far, or too challenging for John to tackle. Any project would be talked through until it was accomplished. Any job would somehow turn into not ever “too far”, but rather I can stop and see so and so & or I could visit this place while I was on the way there/I’ve always wanted to visit _____ place that would be an amazing opportunity. They weren’t looked at like just a job, but rather an adventure and a part of his pride knowing he had contributed to thousands of civic projects across the United States. You never had to worry about whether the contact you were introducing John to would enjoy working with him or if they would be treated fairly, you just knew they were in good hands & trusted that without hesitation. Thousands of granite projects the hands of John touched from near and far & there were countless donations made by our company that John was asked to do the several hours of free sandblast work on and never hesitated. He made Barre and all of Vermont a better place in more ways than one. He also never declined the opportunity to teach anyone his craft. In fact, he was the first volunteer to sandblast with kids & adults at every Vermont Granite Museum event - you knew if you asked John he would be there.
On a personal level - you don’t meet too many people like John. He was the kind of guy that knew everybody and remembered everybody’s story - no matter how small. The kind of guy that would walk into your office and ask you how you and your family were doing & would genuinely wait to hear your answer no matter how busy he was. He had a one-of-a-kind grin that was accompanied by a giggle & unforgettable twinkle in his eye that was enough to make anyone smile. He was always talking extremely highly of his wife, best friend, & partner in this rollercoaster we call life as if they had just gotten married. He was so incredibly proud of each of his two children for all of their accomplishments and the for the people they had grown up to be.
Our hearts go out to the entire Pelkey family during this incredibly difficult time. We will sincerely miss John and we can all learn from him. Spread kindness wherever you go, slow down & listen to who you are talking with, check in on your friends and family often, find a job that you love, teach others your talents, give to your community and all of those around you.
Rest in peace John Pelkey, I have no doubt Heaven’s gates are waiting for you with open arms. ❤️
