Today, General Dynamics Bath Iron Works announced a new housing development for BIW Shipbuilders that will be located at 150 Congress Avenue in Bath.

The leaders of BIW's five unions joined BIW President Chuck Krugh, Developers Collaborative and City of Bath officials, including Vice Chair of the Bath City Council Julie Ambrosino, to break ground for the three buildings that will provide 84 new apartments for BIW employees.

With funding support from the U.S. Navy and General Dynamics, BIW has teamed up with Developers Collaborative, an experienced, Maine-based housing company, to invest in the construction of these new apartments. These will be a mix of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units available in mid-2027, providing more housing options for shipbuilders for many years to come.

Similar to our childcare partnership with the YMCA, BIW employees will have first priority for leasing an apartment. These new apartments will be close enough to walk or bike to the Main Yard and Downtown Bath.

BIW will not own or operate the housing complex. Developers Collaborative brings substantial experience owning and managing workforce housing and will build, own and manage the 84 apartments.

This project benefits from Navy funding to support the defense industry workforce, which was advocated for by Maine’s congressional delegation. These funds are targeted to support initiatives such as housing, childcare, transportation and training.

To learn more about the project and to sign up for updates and application information when that is made available visit www.gdbiw.com/housing

(Note: These are not the same apartments that Bath Housing opened earlier this year at 520 Centre St.)
