One Nebula. Three Perspectives.

This is NGC 7000 — the North America Nebula, captured over 300 × 48-second exposures and processed from my backyard here in the Pacific Northwest.

The three panels tell the story of the image:

🔭 Left: The full field showing the North America Nebula in its surrounding star field. ~110 minute total exposure.

🔍 Center: A closer look reveals intricate lanes of dark dust and glowing hydrogen clouds. ~4 hour total exposure.

✨ Right: Color calibration and star removal uncovers the incredible textures and turbulent structure that make this one of my favorite summer imaging targets.

It’s amazing how much detail is hiding in what looks like a faint patch of the Milky Way to the naked eye.

Three galaxies. One frame. Millions of light-years of cosmic history.

The Leo Triplet (M65, M66, and NGC 3628) is one of the best galaxy groups for visual observers and astrophotographers. While it’s past its spring peak, it’s still well-positioned in the evening sky from Portland and makes a great target before midnight.
