When specifying cable for a VFD output, ampacity is just the starting point.

VFDs generate high-frequency switching noise on the output.

Without the right cable: → That noise couples into adjacent control wiring → Sensor readings become erratic; ghost inputs appear → Motor insulation life shortens through reflected wave voltage

The correct approach: → Use shielded cable, foil plus braid, on all VFD output runs → Ground the shield at the VFD end only. Grounding both ends creates a ground loop. → Keep VFD output cables physically separated from control wiring in the panel and in conduit → On runs over 50 feet, calculate reflected wave voltage and consider a dV/dt filter or load reactor

These aren't refinements for premium builds. They're baseline practices for a panel that won't generate field calls. If your VFD installations are causing interference issues, the cable is almost always the place to look first.|

More machine builders are selling turnkey solutions. Not just the machine. The machine, wired, programmed, integrated, commissioned, and supported. That shift has a direct impact on what they need from their panel supply partners. They need panels that arrive with complete, clean documentation, not something they have to finish themselves. They need schematics in their format. They need a supplier who understands that their end customer's uptime is on the line, not just theirs.

The most expensive part of a bad panel layout isn't the extra wire. It's the troubleshooting call six months later when the customer's tech can't figure out what goes where.

Before you mount the first component, your layout should answer
these questions:

Are power and control sections physically separated?

Is every device accessible for service without removing something else?

Does wire routing flow logically from source to load?

Are high-heat components positioned for airflow, not just available space?

Is there room for the wire duct and terminal blocks you'll need at the end?

If you're quoting projects right now and not checking live lead times before you commit, this is your wake-up call. The component market is tightening in specific categories. Certain safety PLCs: 12–18 weeks. Specific VFD models from major brands: allocation status. Industrial ethernet switches from some manufacturers: back on watchlists.

This isn't 2021. But it's not 2023 either. The shops getting burned are the ones quoting on historical availability, cutting POs after project award, and finding out about lead time problems too late to pivot.
