A few early mornings and a perfect Minnesota sunrise made for some incredible photos, but the real story is the work happening behind the scenes.

This week in Becker, MN, our compost loader was hard at work feeding our trommel screener to screen out any oversized material, keeping our finished compost moving efficiently. Every load plays a part in transforming organic materials into valuable resources.

What is landfill diversion?

Landfill diversion is the process of redirecting materials away from landfills and finding more sustainable uses for them. At Vonco, we help divert organic waste by accepting yard debris from commercial landscapers and haulers and combining it with pre-consumer food waste processed through our depackaging system.

These materials are combined and composted on our 6-acre impermeable asphalt pad. Over several months and careful management, natural decomposition transforms them into our Grade 2, STA Certified compost.

Trusted by landscapers, contractors, and DOT projects, our compost builds healthier soils, retains moisture, and reduces erosion.

What happens to the food waste after it’s separated from packaging?

At Vonco, once the organic matter is separated from its packaging, it’s transported to our compost pad, where it begins a natural recycling process. Using our windrow turner, the material is placed into long rows called windrows and regularly turned to provide oxygen. Over time, naturally occurring microorganisms break down the organic matter, transforming food waste into nutrient-rich compost!
