“We decided to focus on a refinery that incorporated everything that was now available as far as technology is concerned and incorporated into a smaller refinery that meets all of the federal requirements for emissions but is actually permitted under state jurisdiction, giving us the ability to go to other states relatively quickly.”

Interesting piece in last week’s Oil & Gas Investments Bulletin:

“Bank of America is calling this ‘the golden age’ of refiners. You would have been hard pressed to see that coming – refiners have been a beleaguered group for years. But now I gotta admit, there are a bunch of reasons to think that refiners will be in the catbird seat for some time to come.”

Given that the overwhelming majority of US refining capacity is limited to handling heavy crude, we are forced to import from heavy crude sources like Russia and Canada.

We need to re-invent the US refining industry so that all of US production is cleaner than overseas crude for refining. As the industry heats up and the demand for refined light sweet crude heightens, Meridian is taking steps to not only complete its near-term funding, but also increase the capacity of the company to capitalize the additional refineries that we need to build.

If insufficient refinery capacity is keeping gas prices high, then releasing crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve won’t help much.

"Geopolitical dynamics should support U.S. refiners on wide natural gas spreads, though some impacts may be less visible with first quarter earnings than in future quarters," said Jason Gabelman, refining analyst at Cowen.

U.S. oil refiners expect strong first-quarter earnings as margins to sell gasoline and diesel strengthened due to a steep dropoff in refining capacity and crude oil supplies tightened because of Russia's war with Ukraine.

According to a recent BofA Global Research report, analysts at the company noted that they believed “the U.S. refining industry was on the cusp of a new ‘Golden Age’, characterized by a reset in sustainable ‘mid-cycle’ refining margins disproportionately advantaged vs international peers on multiple levels.”

The refiner golden age starts now, according to BofA Global Research.
