Stormwater infrastructure is evolving, and it’s becoming about much more than just drainage.

At Osborn, we’re helping reimagine stormwater facilities as spaces that both improve water quality and strengthen communities. Through two recent projects with Kitsap County, we’re exploring how thoughtful, community-driven design can transform critical infrastructure into places people actually want to be.

From underground treatment facilities designed around cultural gathering spaces to stormwater parks that double as neighborhood green space, these projects highlight a growing shift toward infrastructure that serves both people and place. Landscape architecture shapes the places where daily life unfolds, from parks and schoolyards to campuses, waterfronts, and streetscapes. Though often “invisible,” these design decisions influence how people move, gather, and connect.

As World Landscape Architecture Month comes to a close, we’re sharing highlights from last week’s Washington Recreation and Park Association Annual Conference, where Cheryl Chow Park received a Spotlight Award recognizing outstanding achievements by public agencies across the state.

As Landscape Architect and design lead on the project, we’re proud to see Seattle Parks and Recreation recognized for creating this 1.2-acre green space in the heart of Rainier Valley—one of the most diverse urban neighborhoods in the country.

Once an underutilized site overrun with invasive weeds, the park has been transformed into a welcoming, low-maintenance space designed for kids, families, and the broader community to enjoy for generations. Today, it stands as a true neighborhood gathering place.

We had a fantastic time last week at APWA Washington Chapter's "Building Communities of Belonging" conference in Vancouver!

Osborn’s Cheyenne Covington and Madison Pearson joined Cameron Bloomer (KBA) and Jed Ireland (City of Sammamish) for a lively panel on navigating utility conflicts for public projects. The room was full, the questions were thoughtful, and the conversation highlighted what really moves projects forward efficiently and successfully: strong collaboration between owners, engineers, contractors, and utility providers.

We loved connecting with so many of you - thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth to say hello. Looking forward to continuing the conversation!

We’re proud to share that Seattle Public Schools' Montlake Elementary School and John Rogers Elementary School have both been named finalists for the 2026 Vision Awards!

Hosted by Seattle 2030 District, the Vision Awards recognize projects and leaders advancing innovation in sustainability, energy efficiency, and climate action across our region.

These two schools showcase what the future of learning environments can be: thoughtfully designed, community-centered, and built with sustainability at their core.

Osborn's own Brennan Helwig and Tom Hutchison presented at last week's Joint Annual Conference put on by the Washington Chapter of The Wildlife Society and the Washington-BC Chapter of the American Fisheries Society, for a session on bridging the gap between engineers and biologists in the fish passage design process.

In the Pacific Northwest, restoring historical salmon habitat means designing water crossings that both support fish passage and can withstand strong storm events - but biology and engineering don’t always align. Brennan and Tom highlighted how engineers can better integrate biology into design, focusing on streambed materials, flow modeling, and woody debris placement, while still meeting structural standards. The goal: bridge the gap between disciplines to create solutions that work for both fish and infrastructure.
