Deep window sills are a dead giveaway for a high-performance house. This wall is thick. But why?

Window placement is a design choice, but it's also about thermal bridging (heat sneaking through the framing).

Here's what's in this wall, from the outside in: back-vented siding over a rain screen gap, a weather-resistant membrane, 4 inches of wood-fiber rigid insulation, the structural wall, taped plywood that acts as the air barrier, and a 2x4 service cavity filled with dense-pack cellulose for wiring and plumbing.

Each layer has a job. The rain screen keeps water out, the rigid insulation keeps heat in, and the taped plywood stops air leaks. It adds up!

Matt, in our custom shop, is always up to something fun.

Recently, local glass artist Wendy Brodd () reached out to ask if we could build a steel frame to turn her incredible etched glass panels into a coffee table.
A simple and sturdy way to show off her detailed seascapes. It even lights up!

DM her for custom glasswork or if this table belongs in your house.

The things that make a home feel just right aren’t usually the flashiest.
A clean transition.
A thoughtfully placed window.
A piece of trim that meets exactly where it should.

It’s the kind of simplicity that looks effortless but isn't.

That’s craftsmanship. When the details are done exceptionally well, the whole thing just looks… finished. Built with care.

High performance hiding in plain sight.

Building with excellence means using very specific building methods and materials (triple-pane windows, rain screens, weather-resistive barriers, and exterior insulation) to preserve the life of a home and provide its family with comfort, no matter the weather.

This can easily be done in modern new construction, but these techniques can also be integrated into remodels, making a hundred-year-old house new again!

We love seeing these energy retrofits pop up in every neighborhood in Bellingham. Let's keep it going!
