HOW TO ANSWER AN INTERVIEW QUESTION WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW THE ANSWER?
So what should you do when you get interview questions that you have no idea how to respond to? Try one of these simple approaches:
1. Take Your Time
Make sure that the interviewer knows that you’re thinking about it. You could say, “Let me think about it” and remember to smile. It is important to remember that it is not easy to fill empty space and make sure you avoid awkward silences.
2. Think Aloud
Try to remember that hiring managers are asking tricky questions, not to hear you blurt out the right answer immediately, but to get a better sense of how you think through problems. Gather your thoughts and answer succinctly and make sure you go in the direction where your thoughts have been going.
3. Redirect
If you’re asked a question that you really don’t know, admit it and try redirecting to an area you are familiar with. You may not be able to address a certain skill, but if you’re able to connect it to similar skills, you will show a confidence about your ability on finding overlaps with your skills and the skills they may be looking for.
4. Have a Fail-Safe
If you get a question that no amount of thinking aloud or redirecting can help with, such as defining or understanding of concepts that you don’t know and can’t work through on the spot, then rely on the research you have done about the company and industry. The more research you do, the more thought-provoking resources you will have to call upon!
Ultimately, whatever questions you get, always remember what the hiring manager is really trying to gather about you. You may not be able to answer the actual question asked, but if you are able to figure out what the hiring manager is really looking for, you are already ahead of the game.
