A Labor of Love: Restoring a Piece of West Salem History
About a year ago, an incredible renovation and remodel challenge began in West Salem, WI. This wasn't just any project—it was the restoration of a historic building, originally built in 1902 by the Free Masons. This property holds immense history for the West Salem community.
The necessity for this project arose when my mother, Sara Cox, and her business, Orange Thumb , had to find a new location quickly. An opportunity arose to purchase the historic building just down the street. In a truly unique arrangement, my mother became only the second owner of the property, committing to restore the building to its original grandeur while allowing the Free Mason Lodge to remain on the second floor.
With the gracious support of the local community, help from friends, and family, we dove into the exciting but daunting work ahead. I was privileged to take on this endeavor alongside my mother, Jeff Klein, and good friend, Jim. Along with many many others who where able to lend a hand when possible. Jim and I spent countless hours working to bring my mother’s creative ideas, and visios for the new store to life.
Restoring a 120+year-old structure naturally came with its share of roadblocks, previous temporary quick fixes, and much more. Collaborative problem-solving was key. Between my mother's incredible vision and the professional expertise of Jim and myself, we consistently worked together to devise creative solutions for the complex challenges that arose. I was so thankful and glad to have his partnership; his incredible aptitude for problem-solving, passion for quality craftsmanship, and willingness to help were invaluable. We both learned a great deal from each other throughout this project.
For me, this project was a deeply personal one. I dedicated nearly nine months of full-time work to it, driven by the desire to give back to my mom and Jeff for all they’ve done for me thoughout my life. It was a true labor of love to bring this historic place back to life. It was also the kickstart/ example of the quality, passion, and craftsmanship I bring to every project. I knew it would be setting the stage for the start of Malott Acres Handyman and Custom Design LLC and setting the standard high.
It was a joy to stop by this past weekend for the first time since the grand opening. The space is absolutely beautiful, and the transformation is remarkable.
Congratulations, Mom! I'm so proud I had the opportunity to help make your dream a reality.
We invite you to stop in and see it for yourself! Visit Sara at The Orange Thumb in its new, historic home. She’d be happy to share more about the building's fascinating history and the dedicated efforts of this restoration.
