Here is the landing page for Redox's project to develop low cost (< $1,000/kW), small-scale (5-25 kW) SOFC power systems for distributed generation. Progress should be periodically updated at the DOE project landing page, but we will also provide additional updates as development continues.

Redox Power Systems, LLC (Redox) is pleased to share that Redox has partnered with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and AVL Powertrain Engineering, Inc. (AVL) on an award with the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management. The project (“Low Cost SOFCs for Small-Scale Distributed Power Generation”) brings together advances in SOFC cells/stacks, balance of plant (fuel reformer and heat exchangers), system design and best practices to reduce system cost at lower production volumes (≤ $1,000/kW at ≤ 10,000 systems/year) for small-scale power systems (i.e., 5-25 kW). The project will further increase Redox’s stack performance, while simultaneously reducing stack cost through improvements to reactant flow distribution within the stack and external manifold and use of lower cost components. PNNL will reduce the cost of their microchannel heat exchanger/fuel reformer technology through manufacturing improvements without negatively impacting performance. Moreover, leveraging the lower operating temperature of the SOFC (≤ 650 °C), the system design will be optimized to minimize cost while still achieving very high efficiency (e.g., > 50% LHV) for distributed power generation. Finally, utilizing industry best practices, AVL will lead the detailed design and build for a 7-kW system prototype, which will then be operated using natural gas for ≥ 5,000 hours to provide power for a host test site.

According to Redox CTO Bryan Blackburn, Ph.D., “This project will allow us to greatly reduce the cost of small-scale SOFC power systems for accelerated adoption even at relatively low production volumes. We have put together a world class team and advanced technologies that enable these advances. At the end of the project, we will be in an excellent position to address a greater number of markets without the need for subsidies or MW size installations to make the economics attractive.”

The project kicked off earlier this year is expected to run from 2021 through 2023.

DOE Invests $34 Million to Develop Small-Scale Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Systems

Redox Power Systems, LLC (Redox) is pleased to announce that Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Redox have won an award in the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF) program. ORNL will complete the project with Redox to continue development and scaleup of our roll-to-roll (R2R) manufacturing methods for Redox’s lower temperature, high power Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs). Following from proof-of-concept results that Redox conducted with Kodak, a Small Business Vouchers (SBV) award was received with ORNL and Redox working to optimize several R2R techniques, including calendaring lamination, for SOFC manufacturing. Redox’s SOFCs made with the optimized R2R methods demonstrated the same performance as our cells manufactured through more conventional, discrete processing methods (e.g., layer-by-layer lamination, one device at a time).

Redox CTO Bryan Blackburn, Ph.D. stated: “We are excited that DOE’s Office of Technology Transitions sees the technical merit and market potential in the continued funding of ORNL’s and Redox’s roll-to-roll development efforts. Redox believes that working together with ORNL will result in higher throughput capability and cost savings of R2R techniques at lower production volumes.” The R2R development efforts will allow Redox to accelerate market traction with small-scale SOFC systems (e.g., 5 kW – 25 kW building blocks) that are cost competitive with the status quo and other alternative energy solutions.

Of the $33 Million in TCF awards across 82 projects, the ORNL/Redox award is the second largest and is expected to start in early 2021.

(College Park, MD) Redox Power Systems, LLC, a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power system company, announces $1 million project award from Department of Energy. The project has FY 2019 funding and involves the development of new solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) in support of the H2@Scale concept, which will “advance hydrogen storage and infrastructure technologies and identify innovative concepts for hydrogen production and utilization including grid resiliency,” said DOE. The SOEC can use intermittent, solar and wind energy to produce clean H2, which can then feed Redox’s SOFCs for always-on renewable power generation at a reduced cost.

College Park, MD— On August 15th, 2019, the U.S. Department of Energy announced Redox Power Systems is to receive $1M in FY 2019 funding to further the H2@Scale concept, which “will advance hydrogen storage and infrastructure technologies and identify innovative concepts for hydrogen production ...
