Fuel totalizers and fuel level indication serve two very different purposes.

A totalizer estimates fuel remaining based on fuel flow data, but it can’t detect leaks, improper fueling, or fuel loss from an unsecured cap. Reliable fuel level indication provides an independent verification of the actual fuel onboard.

At CiES, we manufacture fuel level indication senders designed to give pilots accurate, dependable fuel quantity information when it matters most.

Here's another Tuesday Tech Tip! Confirm the aircraft indication system matches the sender output type.

Not all indicators interpret signals the same way—ensure compatibility between the sender, converter, and cockpit display.

CiES systems provide digital frequency output on the blue wire as standard. When analog output is required, a voltage output is added on the green wire without removing the digital output.

Using the incorrect signal type for the installed indicator will result in improper—or no—fuel level indication.

When it comes to aircraft maintenance and troubleshooting, documentation isn’t optional—it’s essential.

Records that include part numbers, wiring configuration, and calibration data make future troubleshooting significantly faster. Without that baseline data, even simple issues can turn into time-consuming diagnostics.

Take the extra time today to document thoroughly. It pays off every time you (or the next tech) need to trace a problem.

For this Tech Tip Tuesday, let's discuss water intrusion. Water intrusion is a silent killer for fuel gauge accuracy, especially on Piper Navajos and Aztecs.

The Problem: Access panels located directly above top-mounted senders are notorious for leaky seals. While CiES sensors are internally potted against moisture, exposed wiring and connectors can still short out if water pools on top of the tank.

The Fix: Verify panel sealing and use environmentally-sealed connectors.

Don't let a bad seal lead to a bad reading. Keep it dry, keep it accurate!
