One of the biggest misconceptions about water damage is that if you don’t see mold right away, you’re in the clear.

Unfortunately, mold can begin growing just 24–48 hours after water damage occurs under the right conditions. But that doesn’t mean visible mold immediately appears on walls or ceilings.

In many cases, mold spores begin colonizing in hidden areas first—behind drywall, under flooring, inside insulation, or within crawlspaces where moisture lingers unnoticed. It can take around 12 days for mold colonies to establish, and often 2–3 weeks before visible growth appears.

By the time mold becomes visible, moisture may have already caused damage to building materials and indoor air quality.

That’s why fast action after a leak, overflow, or pipe break is so important. Proper drying isn’t just about removing standing water—it’s about identifying hidden moisture before microbial growth has a chance to spread.

At Peak Northwest Restoration, we use professional moisture detection and drying techniques to help identify hidden moisture early and reduce the risk of microbial growth.

If your home has experienced water damage, even if it “looks dry,” it’s worth having it checked.

Coming home to water damage is one of those moments every homeowner hopes they never experience.

Whether it’s a burst pipe, appliance leak, or an overflowing fixture, the first step is simple: act quickly.

The faster moisture is addressed, the better the chances of preventing larger issues like warped flooring, damaged drywall, and microbial growth. Even a few hours can make a difference.

Just as important? Don’t try to handle it all alone.

Calling a professional restoration team early can help take some of the stress off your shoulders. At Peak Northwest Restoration, we help homeowners navigate the situation step-by-step — from identifying hidden moisture to creating a clear plan for drying and restoration.

If you come home to unexpected water damage, take a breath, shut off the water source if possible, and give us a call. We’re available 24/7 and always offer free inspections.

Exterior Water Intrusion: A Common Cause of Hidden Damage

Not all water damage starts inside the home. In many cases, it begins outside—slowly working its way in over time.

As we move into spring and summer in Central Oregon, there are a few common exterior issues that can lead to water intrusion:

1. Poor grading around the foundation
If the ground slopes toward your home instead of away, water can collect and seep into crawlspaces or basements.

2. Clogged gutters and downspouts
When gutters overflow, water runs down the side of the house instead of being directed away—often ending up where it shouldn’t be.

3. Irrigation spraying the house
Sprinklers that hit siding, windows, or the foundation can introduce moisture day after day, leading to long-term damage.

These issues often go unnoticed until signs appear inside—musty odors, warped materials, or visible staining.

A quick look around your exterior can go a long way in preventing bigger problems.

If you suspect water may be getting in, Peak Northwest Restoration offers free inspections and is here to help you catch issues early.

Should You File a Water Damage Claim?
After a water loss, one of the first questions we hear from homeowners in Bend and across Central Oregon is:
“Should I file a claim?”
The answer isn’t always straightforward.
Some types of water damage—like a burst pipe or appliance failure—are often covered. Others, especially slow leaks or long-term issues, may not be. The cause of the damage plays a big role.
It also depends on the size of the loss. Smaller issues may fall below your deductible, while larger situations involving drying, demolition, or potential mold may be worth filing.
If you’re unsure, a professional inspection can help you make the right call. At Peak Northwest Restoration, we identify moisture, check for hidden damage, and provide clear documentation—so you can decide what makes the most sense for your situation.
And if you do move forward with a claim, we can help guide you through that process as well.

Water damage has incredible timing.

It’s almost never 2:00 PM on a Tuesday.
It’s 11:30 PM… when you’re barefoot… stepping in something that shouldn’t be there.

If you’ve had that moment—you’re not alone.

📞 We’re available 24/7 for exactly that reason.

Why does my hose faucet only leak when it’s turned on?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from homeowners in Bend and across Central Oregon.

Outdoor faucets (hose bibs, spigots, hydrants) are designed to hold water behind a valve when turned off. That means even if there’s a crack or damage, you may not see a leak right away.

But once you turn it on?
Water starts moving—and any damage in the line (like a worn washer, cracked pipe, or freeze break) will show up fast.

In our area, freeze damage is one of the leading causes of this issue.

If your faucet only leaks when in use, it’s usually a sign something inside has failed.

Leaky outdoor faucet? Don’t ignore it.

If your hose bib or outdoor faucet only leaks when turned on, it might seem minor—but it can point to hidden damage behind the wall or in your crawlspace.

In Central Oregon, freeze damage can cause small cracks that don’t show until water is flowing again. Over time, even a small leak can lead to moisture buildup, wood damage, or microbial growth in areas you can’t see.

A few signs to watch for:
• Water dripping when the faucet is on
• Moisture around exterior walls
• Damp smells near crawlspaces or basements

Catching it early can prevent much bigger problems.

If something doesn’t seem right, it’s worth taking a closer look.

Why Crawlspaces in Central Oregon Are Prone to Moisture

Crawlspaces are one of the most overlooked areas of a home—but in Central Oregon, they’re also one of the most vulnerable to moisture issues.

Temperature swings can create condensation, especially in winter. Add in poor ventilation or water intrusion from rain, snowmelt, or irrigation, and moisture can build up quickly—leading to musty odors, wood damage, and even mold.

Because crawlspaces are out of sight, problems often go unnoticed until damage has already started.

If something smells off or you suspect moisture below your home, it’s worth taking a closer look.
