Caught during service: a broken back pressure valve spring on a PACCAR engine.

A failed spring here can affect regen performance and, left long enough, turn into a bigger emissions system problem. Caught early, it's a quick fix. Caught late, it's a tow.

During a routine PM inspection, we caught a mud flap bracket with a broken weld at the base. The bracket was already bent from the stress — it was only a matter of time before it snapped clean off.

A mud flap bracket coming loose at highway speed isn't just a lost mud flap. That's a piece of metal flying off a moving trailer, potentially into traffic behind it.

This is exactly why PM inspections matter — catching the small stuff before it becomes a roadside call, or worse, an incident. We re-welded the bracket and got the unit back in service.

Customer called about a hydraulic leak on his woodchipper. Simple enough — until we got eyes on it.

The leak was coming from the hydraulic hose that runs the clutch actuation. That hose had been dumping fluid straight onto the clutch. Problem is, this isn't an oil-bath clutch — it's not designed to run wet. So what started as "I've got a hydraulic leak" turned into a contaminated, failed clutch.

Chipper's torn down now, waiting on the new clutch to arrive. We'll post the install when it's back together.

Moral of the story: a leak isn't always just a leak. If something on your equipment is leaking near a component that isn't supposed to see fluid, get it looked at before it turns into a bigger job.

Check engine light was on.

Jim pulled codes on this one and they pointed straight to the crankcase ventilation module. On the MX-13, that module isn't just a vent — it's tied into engine management, so a failure there sets a code and lights up the dash even when the truck feels fine on the road.

Swapped the module, cleared the codes, verified the fix. Full walkthrough is up now — what the CEL was telling us, how we diagnosed it down to the module, and the replacement itself.

That red thing under the transmission is a 2,000 lb rated Pittsburgh jack. It is not the nicest tool we own, and we would not pretend otherwise.

But it is level, it is strapped, it is stable, and the transmission came out clean.

There is a lot of noise out there about having the best of everything before you can do good work. A tool you know cold beats a tool you are still figuring out.

30 years in this trade and the jobs that went sideways were almost never about the tool. They were about somebody being in a hurry.

Preventative Maintenance Tip of the Day:

Here’s the part every driver and fleet manager needs to know: that spring inside is under massive tension. These chambers should never be opened without a caging tool. We’ve seen what happens when someone skips that step, and it’s not something you want to be standing in front of.

Jim caught something during a routine PM inspection this week that could've turned into a roadside call at a scale for wet brakes — the seal on this unit was seated wrong from a previous job. Left alone, that's a red tag at a scale and diminished-stopping-power problem waiting to happen, not just a seal.

This is why we go over everything at PM, not just what's on the checklist. Pulling it apart now to reseat the seal correctly before it becomes a bigger repair — or a call from the dreaded scale house.

A zip tie costs about a nickel. Here's what it costs when it's missing.

This line was hanging loose under the frame, rubbing against a crossmember every mile that truck ran. Nobody would flag it walking around the truck. It doesn't leak, it doesn't throw a code, it doesn't make noise.

It just wears. Slowly. Until it doesn't.

Then it fails somewhere inconvenient — and now you're not paying for a zip tie, you're paying for a road call, a tow, or a driver sitting on the shoulder waiting on somebody.
