🧲 Magnetic Particle Testing (MT): Precision You Can See

In the world of non-destructive testing (NDT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) also known as Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) is one of the most trusted methods for detecting surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials like iron, nickel, and cobalt alloys.

Here’s how it works: 👇

When a component is magnetized, any discontinuity (such as a crack, seam, or inclusion) interrupts the magnetic field, causing flux leakage.
Finely divided magnetic particles, applied dry or in a liquid suspension, gather at the leakage site — creating a visible indication of the flaw’s size, shape, and location.

💡 Why MT Matters:
Detects even subtle surface-breaking defects
Provides immediate visual results
Works well for welds, castings, and machined parts
Portable and efficient for both field and shop applications

⚙️ Limitations:
Only works on ferromagnetic materials
Surface must be accessible for accurate interpretation

From aerospace to oil & gas, MT remains a cornerstone of quality assurance, balancing science, precision, and practicality all without damaging the part being inspected.

As outage season ramps up, Applied Inspection Systems is focused on safeguarding client assets.

Our use of Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) and other advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) methods provides early detection of subsurface flaws, enabling asset owners to:

✔️ Reduce the likelihood of unplanned outages
✔️ Optimize maintenance planning
✔️ Minimize downtime during critical outage windows
✔️ Extend the service life of high-value components

By integrating proactive inspection strategies, AIS ensures that equipment reliability and operational efficiency remain uncompromised.

Throwback to the first ultrasonic NDT machine!

In the late 1940s, the Supersonic Reflectoscope became the very first ultrasonic testing (UT) instrument used for non-destructive testing. Originally developed by Dr. Floyd Firestone at the University of Michigan, it revolutionized the way inspectors could “see” inside metal.

By sending high-frequency sound waves into steel, the Reflectoscope could detect cracks, inclusions, and flaws hidden deep below the surface without damaging the part. Railroads like Erie Railroad quickly adopted the technology to improve locomotive safety and reliability.

This breakthrough laid the foundation for today’s advanced UT methods, including phased array and TOFD, that Applied Inspection Systems uses daily to ensure the integrity of critical assets across industries.

From Reflectoscopes to Phased Array, NDT has come a long way but the mission remains the same: safety, reliability, and innovation.
