The conversations at Supergreen 2026 have come to a close, but the ideas exchanged will continue to shape the future of supercritical fluid technology.

Over the past few days in Sapporo, Japan, Deshal Yadav Dalwadi, our Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Applications & Chemistry, had the opportunity to connect with researchers, technology developers, and industry professionals from around the world. From emerging research to discussions on scale-up, process optimisation, and commercial applications, the conference brought together the people driving the field forward.

Every extraction specialist knows supercritical CO₂ as a tool for botanicals and aromatics. Fewer stop to note where it began.

The first major commercial application of supercritical fluid extraction was not a spice or a flower. It was coffee. When Kurt Zosel patented CO₂ decaffeination around 1970, he demonstrated that supercritical CO₂ could selectively remove caffeine from a complex natural matrix at industrial scale.

Much of what the field does today with essential oils and oleoresins rests on that same principle. The materials have grown more sophisticated, but the physics stays the same.

The costliest constraints in a plant are usually the ones nobody notices at setup.

Fuel is the clearest case. A dryer gets built around whatever's cheapest and easiest on commissioning day. Whatever's already piped in or trucked in reliably. But that one specification quietly sets the plant's energy costs for the next 15 or 20 years.

When prices move, and they always do, gas gets expensive, pipeline allocation shifts, diesel gets rationed. There's little room left to respond. The real cost was never the fuel. It was the flexibility given up to save a bit of complexity at the start.

We've learned to raise this early, while the line is still being designed. A dryer that can run on gas, electricity, or high speed diesel keeps the decision open, letting operations follow whatever's most economical rather than being held to what was cheapest on day one. The goal was never to guess future fuel prices. It was to stop needing to.

Pepper's identity splits cleanly in two. The aroma comes from its volatile essential oil, a mix of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes like pinene, limonene and caryophyllene. The heat comes from piperine, a non-volatile alkaloid that behaves nothing like the oil around it.

That difference is where the extraction method quietly decides the outcome. Steam distillation lifts the volatile oil and leaves piperine behind, because a non-volatile alkaloid does not carry over with steam. What you get smells convincingly of pepper and has almost none of its bite. Aroma intact, pungency gone.

The complete material is the oleoresin, the volatile oil and piperine together, which is why commercial oleoresins are standardised to a defined piperine content, typically in the region of 35 to 50 percent. Supercritical CO2 reaches both, and more usefully, separates them on purpose. At lower pressure it draws off the volatile aroma oil. Raising the pressure brings piperine and the heavier resin into the extract. One tunable process, yielding the aroma fraction, the pungent oleoresin, or both in a single fractionated run, with no solvent left to remove.

Pepper is a reminder that a spice is rarely one thing. Its aroma and its heat answer to different physics, and capturing both, or either by design, comes down to control.

Most extraction businesses are built around the demands of the market they entered, not the one they are heading into.

That gap is widening. Buyers across fragrance, pharmaceuticals and food are tightening their standards on purity, residual solvents and sustainability, and the extracts that meet those standards are increasingly the ones produced with CO2.

Bubble has always come down to control. Temperature, agitation, timing. Get any of them wrong and the batch changes, even with the same flower.
