Look what I found today! This may not seem like a big deal but this sensing bulb tells your TXV how much to open or close (to send to appropriate amount of refrigerant into the evap coil). If it’s left uninsulated like this, the bulb thinks the pipe is much warmer than it actually is (because attic air is HOT), so it closes more to try to get the coil colder. Now when the system is operating properly and the pipe is ACTUALLY not warm, this will cause the coil to freeze up! Found this on a basic maintenance today and insulated it so our superheat stays ideal and we don’t freeze our coil up! One of the many adjustments we make for free on these maintenances AND something that an experienced eye like Cavanaugh HVAC will catch at your tune up!
