Chimneys and masonry get neglected more than they should.

We see it every day—crumbling mortar, loose bricks, and walls that haven’t been touched in years. It’s easy to forget until problems show up!

There’s no single answer for how often masonry needs attention.

• Sheltered, well-sealed brick, stone, or block can last 30+ years with almost no work.

• Exposed areas like chimneys and north-facing walls may only last 10–15 years in harsh weather.

In Northern Ohio, our frequent freeze-thaw cycles make things worse. Water gets into tiny cracks, freezes, expands, and speeds up damage to mortar and bricks.

What should you do?

• Inspect your masonry every 1–2 years.
• Watch for crumbling mortar, cracked or spalling bricks, gaps, water stains, or white powdery buildup.
• When joints start failing, tuckpointing is the smart fix—it resets the clock and protects your home.

It’s much easier and far cheaper to tuckpoint early than to repair or rebuild later. We promise!

At the heart of it, we really believe contractors should lift each other up.

Last year we hired Rex Melson to do the painting on one of our jobs. This year the favor came full circle — we went over to his place and tuckpointed the mortar joints, plus replaced several compromised stones on his beautiful historic blue vein limestone porch.

It felt good to give that old porch a solid refresh while keeping its original character and making sure it stays strong for years to come. That’s what collaboration in the trades is all about: mutual respect, good work, and looking out for each other.

Proud to return the trust with some careful tuckpointing and stone replacement.
