Last week, we were honored to host the Hartford Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) for their “Coffee & Conversation” event at one of our active project sites.

The morning kicked off with coffee, breakfast, and networking, bringing together a fantastic group of women in the construction industry. Attendees then got a firsthand look at the progress onsite, with Superintendent Pete Drane leading an engaging and informative tour.

We’re grateful to everyone who joined us for such a meaningful morning of connection and insight. And many thanks to our controller, Sara Gutierrez, NAWIC Director, for her continued dedication and leadership within the industry.

The concrete slab was recently poured at our The Goddard School site in Cheshire, and it wasn't as straightforward as originally planned.

The forecast called for heavy rain on the initially planned day. But pouring concrete in heavy rain is not an option, and waiting meant delaying the project’s critical path by several days. So we decided to move the pour up by two days, from a Monday to a Saturday.

That decision required significant coordination in a very short time frame. Material deliveries had to be moved up, and the pre-pour inspection had to be rescheduled. The pad needed to be prepped ahead of the original timeline. The concrete plant had to open outside of normal hours, and all necessary trades had to mobilize to the site on short notice and commit to weekend work. It was a significant pivot.

The pour kicked off at 6:00 am on Saturday and ran smoothly all day long, thanks to Pete Drane, our superintendent on this project, who coordinated all the moving pieces and made it happen. Thanks also to Garcia Jara, our concrete contractor, who showed up when we needed them most (and provided us with some awesome drone footage)!

Good partnerships with trade partners, suppliers, and inspectors make the difference between moving a project forward and watching timelines slip. And when challenges come up, our team finds a way around them.

Not sure if your next project needs wood framing or structural steel? Let’s unpack what you need to know:

Wood framing can be the most cost-effective option for smaller buildings with defined spaces, like schools with individual classrooms or office buildings with lots of small rooms and interior walls. When your layout is set, and you don't need wide open spans, wood framing can be a practical choice that helps keep your budget under control.

Structural steel costs more upfront, but it gives you something wood can't: wide open floor plans and flexibility down the road. If you need clear, open space—as you see in many retail and industrial buildings —or you want the option to reconfigure layouts later without tearing into load-bearing walls, steel makes sense. Steel is also highly durable, non-combustible, and resistant to many environmental factors like moisture, pets, and warping.

In the end, the right choice depends on the building’s scope, budget, timeline, and long-term performance goals. Building code requirements and fire-rating requirements based on use are also important considerations. Working with a construction partner early in the process can help you to evaluate the options and identify which structural material best supports your project’s goals.

This week – and every week – we are proud to work alongside the talented women who are helping shape the future of construction.

Construction has long been a male-dominated field, but that story is changing.
Women are shaping projects, leading teams, solving complex problems, and bringing new perspectives to the jobsite and the office. Their expertise, perspective, and leadership make a real difference on every job.
While the industry has made progress, there’s still work to do. Women make up approximately 10% of the construction workforce, and just 4% in the trades.

Continuing to change that takes intention.
Companies can help move that progress forward by:
•Creating clear pathways for advancement and leadership
•Supporting training, certifications, and mentorship opportunities
•Building jobsite cultures where everyone feels respected and supported
•Recognizing and amplifying the contributions of women across the industry

What’s one thing you can commit to this year to help move the needle forward?

We’re excited to officially break ground on our second project with The Goddard School in Cheshire, CT - even though it means braving some seriously cold weather, and finding effective ways to work in these temps to get things going!

This 13,294 square foot, ground-up facility will support infant through pre-K programs and is scheduled for completion in summer 2026. Early learning environments set the foundation for how students learn, grow, and thrive, which makes thoughtful planning essential from the very start.

Project Manager Mike Niedomys and Superintendent Pete Drane are leading this build, and as construction gets underway, coordination across the entire team will be key. Our trade partners will play an important role in keeping progress moving and aligned as this new facility takes shape.

We’re grateful for the continued partnership with The Goddard School and look forward to delivering a space that will support students, families, and educators for years to come. Stay tuned for progress updates!

There’s a difference between finishing a project and earning the next one.

That difference usually comes down to how the work is led in the field. Clear communication, realistic planning, and strong leadership are what allow projects to run well and clients to stay confident throughout the process. And that’s what we’re looking for in our next Superintendent.

This opportunity is for a Superintendent who wants to work in an environment built around trust and long-term relationships. It’s fast paced-and exciting, with support from the office and expectations that allow the work to be done right. The goal is to set people up for success on site and at home, for a long, rewarding career.

The work spans commercial projects across the Northeast. Superintendents are trusted to lead the work, make decisions in the field, and adjust as projects evolve.

If this resonates with the kind of work place you’d want to be a part of, apply today:

You may not see Marie Schmidt’s work in the final project photos, but her impact is critically important in keeping our field teams aligned and on track throughout the build. As our Accounting Administrator and “behind-the-scenes” expert for the last five years, she’s managed the constant movement we need to keep projects on pace.

Marie coordinates the complex web of field expenses, as well as the steady stream of contracts and the administration of change management. And she handles that daily pressure with an efficiency that makes a difficult job look simple.

Her work is the reason we stay organized, compliant, and ready for whatever comes next. We’re incredibly grateful for the standard she sets and the impact she’s made on our team.

Happy 5th Anniversary, Marie!

2025 was a year of genuine growth for Fortunato. It's not always a smooth ride and we had our fair share of unforeseen challenges and complex site conditions, but those hurdles only made the wins more satisfying.

So we are entering 2026 with deep gratitude for the people who made it possible. We appreciate our clients who trust us with their vision, our trade partners who consistently deliver quality even when the schedule is tight, and our whole team that refuses to settle for "good enough."

We don't need to overcomplicate the plan for the next twelve months. We’re simply going to keep doing great work, keep learning from every project, and keep building the kind of trust that lasts.

Happy New Year from everyone at Fortunato! 🎆

Construction is a serious business. We spend the vast majority of our year consumed by lead times and getting the details exactly right. We take our projects seriously, but we try not to take ourselves too seriously.

So we recently swapped our hard hats for something a little more festive. The Fortunato team got together at Millpond Gatherings to close out the year, and for once, the schedule wasn't the main topic of conversation. It was a chance to celebrate another successful and productive year together over great food and drinks, pick up some new team swag, and keep our annual tradition of singing a few Christmas carols alive!

It’s easy to write about "company culture" in an employee handbook, but it is much harder to actually build it. Real culture happens in the moments between the projects. This team works incredibly hard to deliver for our clients, and we value and appreciate each person for who they are and what they do.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the whole FCG team!
