Welcome back to the Devotional Corner. Today, we will continue looking at how to deal with pressure. The first lesson was to learn the value of rest.

The second lesson we need to learn in dealing with pressure is the lesson of diversion. (Read again our text, Mark 6: 30-32)

The disciples were enjoying the ministry that Christ had given them - there was nothing more exciting than what they were doing - healing the sick, casting out demons in His name; things were going great, but Jesus pointed out to them that they needed to get away and do something else for the moment.

Whatever you do in life, you need a diversion; a change of pace. It is never healthy to stick at the same thing day after day. The ministry of the disciples (as glorious as it was) needed to take a change of pace. It will be different for everyone. For some it might be golf, tennis, gardening, fishing, knitting or for some, sewing - but do what will give you a change of pace.

A third lesson is to learn the value of prayer. Jesus used this often and can I ask, “Who is a better listener than God?” We have God to pour out our hearts to. God gave us the privilege of confessing any problems/sins to Him in prayer.

Jesus prayed often - in the morning, at noon and evening, and He never came close to a nervous breakdown. We’re so quick to go to some individual, why not God? I believe God is saying to us today, “pray to me, talk to me, and the pressures of life will not get you down. You may not always get to the pastor, or some close friend, but you can always get to God.

Pressures come from inside, not from the outside. There is no person that can put you under pressure. We often say, “if only the circumstances were different, if only I had a different job, if only I had more money, things would be different.” Not so!

You see, pressure is the personal response to exterior circumstances. Think about it in terms of your own life. I can let someone bug me if I want, but I just don’t want to. I can let a circumstance get me down, but I’m not going to let it. I would much rather allow the Holy Spirit to soothe and comfort me. I don’t have to let the pressures of life get me down.

Now, I wish I could tell you I have this down perfect in my life, but sadly, no. This is something I think we have to continually work on in all of our lives.
Well, that’s it for this week. Until next time keep trusting and believing…..

Welcome back to the Devotional Corner. Today, my text is Mark 6:30-32. Read it before you go any further.

The story is told of a lady who had a terrible thing happen to her with her pressure cooker on the stove. Unaware of it, the safety valve had become clogged. And, while she was out of the kitchen, she heard a terrible noise and when she came back in the kitchen, her stew was all over the kitchen ceiling.

Now, this is exactly what happens to many people in their lives - their release valve mis-functions and they explode, and so, to correct it, they embark on a course of either exhausting relaxation or they submerge in active work, both of which follow with disastrous results.

The question is often asked, “Does the Word of God speak to the problem of pressure?” According to our text, it does.

Notice with me that the disciples had been sent out to minister to people. Their days and nights had been consumed by ministry, praying for the sick, casting out devils, seeing people healed and restored.

And as they returned, they returned men under pressure. It tells us that they told Jesus “what they had done and what they had taught.” So, what did Jesus do with these men under pressure?

Jesus told them in verse 31, “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place and rest awhile.” No matter who we are, what we do, we must learn the value of rest!

Someone has said, “If you don’t come apart to rest, you will come apart.” God has given man the beauty of rest. Even in creation he has shown us we need rest. That’s why he gave us darkness, so we could turn it off and wake up fresh and ready to meet the challenges of a new day.

The Bible tells us that six days God worked and on the seventh day, he rested. Did you know that God had to rest also? Even the fields that grow our crops need to rest; they need to be left alone in order to rejuvenate the soil.

If you’re having a problem, if you feel under pressure, don’t feel condemned, just get some rest and turn it all off.

You see, Jesus saw the need for rest and he simply told his disciples that they were not going to go back out and heal the sick, cast out demons - they needed to get some rest (even though the people were still there). Now, if Jesus saw the need for rest, how much more do we need to recognize it, in this pressure pact age.

That’s it for this week. Join me next time as we learn another lesson in how to handle pressure. Until then, keep trusting and believing…..

Welcome back to the Devotional Corner. Today, we are concluding our study on the different forms of prayer, looking at intercession. My text for today is Ezekiel 22:30 which says, “I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none.”

Chapter 22 explains why Jerusalem’s judgment would come, how it would come, and who would be judged by it.

The leaders were especially responsible for the moral climate of the nation because God chose them to lead. The same is true today…many of the sins mentioned in this chapter have been committed in recent years by Christian leaders. We are living in a time of unprecedented attacks by satan. We need to uphold our leaders in prayer.

Verse 26 points out that the priests were supposed to keep God’s worship pure and teach the people right living. But the worship of God became common place to them. They ignored the Sabbath and refused to teach the people…they no longer carried out their God-given duties.

In verse 30, the wall spoken of is not made of stone, but of faithful people united in their efforts to resist evil. This wall was in disrepair because there was no one who could lead the people back to God.

The feeble attempts to repair the gap through religious rituals or messages based upon opinion rather than God’s will, were as worthless as white-wash, only covering the real problems.

Never, ever use religion as a white-wash; repair your life by applying the principles of God’s word. Then you can join with others to stand in the gap and make a difference in this world.

Although God is all-powerful and all-knowing, he has chosen to let us help him change the world through our prayers. (Read I Timothy 2:1)

Paul based his instructions about prayer for everyone on his conviction that God’s invitation for salvation extends equally to everyone (all people). The word everyone captures the nature of the Gospel. The world that God loves includes every person (John 3:16).

So, Paul urges us to pray for everyone, including those in authority. This was difficult because of the severe persecution believers were going through; some were butchered in public, some were burned or fed to animals.

Who should be the object of our intercession:

(1) people in sin
(2) people who are demon-possessed
(3) people who are sick
(4) people in authority
(5) people in the church

God is looking for someone to stand in the gap today! Will he find even one willing?

That’s it for this week. Until next time keep trusting and believing and praying!

Welcome back to the Devotional Corner. This week, in honor of Mother’s Day, I want to share a reading called, A Strong Woman verses A Woman of Strength. It goes like this:

“A strong woman works out every day to keep her body in shape…
but a woman of strength kneels in prayer to keep her soul in shape…

A strong woman isn’t afraid of anything…but a woman of strength
shows courage in the midst of fear…

A strong woman won’t let anyone get the best of her…but a woman
of strength gives the best of her to everyone…

A strong woman makes mistakes and avoids the same in the future…
a woman of strength realizes life’s mistakes can also be God’s
blessings and capitalizes on them…

A strong woman walks sure footedly…
but a woman of strength knows God will catch her when she falls…

A strong woman wears the look of confidence on her face…
but a woman of strength wears grace…

A strong woman has faith that she is strong enough for the
journey…but a woman of strength has faith that it is in the journey
that she will become strong…” (author unknown)

Luther once said, “The greatest gift of God is a pious, amiable spouse, who fears God, loves His house, and with whom one can live in perfect
confidence.” The writer of Proverbs put it this way, “A woman whose children will rise up and call her blessed, and whose husband will praise her.” (Proverbs 31:28)

So, the question is, what kind of mother does God choose?

(1) one who deems “motherhood” a high calling,
(2) a woman of character,
(3) a woman submitted to the will of God.

To all mothers, we wish a blessed day for you and a day filled with love and thanksgiving. Happy Mother’s Day!

That’s it for this week. Next time we will finish our study on the different forms of prayer. Until then, keep trusting and believing…..

Welcome back to the Devotional Corner. Today, we are continuing our study on the different forms of prayer, and this week we are looking at prayer without words.

We have mentioned that prayer is really an attitude of our hearts toward God. Sometimes it will find its expression in words and at other times without words, something like when two people love each other there are times when we must express our attitudes or feelings in words - this is what really makes the fellowship of human beings so beautiful and so rich.

But there are things for which we can find no words. Maybe this is what the Apostle Paul was talking about when he said, “…We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” (Romans 8:26/NIV)

Now in the presence of family and friends it’s not always necessary to be talking; we can simply be quiet and enjoy their presence. And this is the way it is with our Heavenly Father - there will be times, of course, when we share, talk to Him but there are other times when I can be silent and simply enjoy being in His presence. Our groanings which cannot be uttered, rise to Him and tell Him better than words how dependent we are upon Him.

In Psalm 46:10 the Psalmist writes, “Be still, and know that I am God…”.
There are times when we need to stand back and leave all to Him. There’s a poem which goes like this:

“Should storms of sevenfold
thunder roll,
And shake the globe from
pole to pole,
No flaming bolt shall
daunt my face,
For Jesus is my
hiding place.”

That’s it for this week. Next time we’ll look at the prayer of intercession. Until then, keep trusting and believing…….
