Let's talk French drains!
French drains are a common solution for reducing standing water around homes, garages and barns. Most of us have heard the term, but do you actually know what it is?
These photos show what a French drain actually looks like, and I'm going to explain how it works.
After we determine the problem areas and have decided on the best layout for installation, we start with digging the trench. It's typically 2' wide, and about 2 foot deep, sloped in the direction we want the water to travel.
We lay geotextile fabric in the trench, which will both keep the stone layer we will install next separated from the dirt below, and will also catch surface water and function sort of like a giant pipe.
Next, we add a few inches of 2B clean stone for drainage. It also serves as a cushion for the pipe, and help prevent future breaks.
On top of the stone we install perforated schedule 35 pipe, which will allow surface water to enter and direct it to our desired location. Finally, we backfill with stone and dirt.
Paired with correct grading and swales, French drains can be incredibly effective at managing water!
