Emergency Management Agencies (EMAs) for Luzerne and Columbia Counties recently announced that FEMA’s IPAWS Wireless Emergency Alert system, which sends alerts to cell phones and wireless devices, is now the primary way the public will be notified of nuclear emergencies. In addition to IPAWS-WEA, the CodeRED mass notification system will automatically call all public landlines, and messages will be broadcast on local Emergency Alert System TV and Radio stations. The use of sirens will be discontinued following a six-month transition period.

Representatives from Luzerne County and Columbia County EMAs and Susquehanna Emergency Preparedness will participate in an event on Wednesday, May 21 from 5-7 p.m. at the Salem Township building to provide more information about IPAWS-WEA and help community members to enroll to receive the additional notification methods CodeRED offers. All members of the community are welcome, and no signups are required.
