Before you call because your A/C "quit"... read this first.

Ohio is in the middle of a dangerous heat wave, and HVAC systems across the Cincinnati area are working harder than they'll work all year. Our phones are ringing nonstop, so we wanted to share a few tips that may save you time, money, and possibly a service call.

First, don't panic if your A/C is running all day.

When outdoor temperatures climb into the mid to upper 90s, it's completely normal for many systems to run continuously. Air conditioners are designed to maintain your home's temperature, not necessarily lower it several degrees during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Before calling for service, check these items:

✓ Replace your air filter if it's dirty.

✓ Make sure your thermostat is set to COOL and the fan is on AUTO.

✓ Verify your circuit breakers haven't tripped.

✓ Keep all supply and return vents open and unobstructed.

✓ Close blinds and curtains on sunny windows.

✓ Avoid using ovens, dryers, and other heat-producing appliances during peak afternoon hours.

✓ Keep doors and windows closed to keep hot, humid air outside.

✓ Check that your outdoor unit is free of grass, weeds, cottonwood, and debris. It needs at least 2 feet of open space to breathe.

If you see ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil:

Turn the thermostat OFF and switch the fan to ON. Let the system thaw completely before restarting. Running a frozen air conditioner can cause severe compressor damage.

If your system is over 10 years old:

Extreme heat often exposes weak capacitors, failing motors, dirty coils, low refrigerant, and aging electrical components. Addressing small issues early can often prevent a complete breakdown.

A few things that help your A/C more than you might think:

• Change your filter every 1 to 3 months.
• Have your system professionally serviced each spring.
• Don't repeatedly lower the thermostat hoping it cools faster. It won't.
• Keep your outdoor unit clean, but never pressure wash the coil.
• Replace batteries in your thermostat if applicable.

Most importantly, stay hydrated and check on elderly neighbors, young children, and pets. This kind of heat can become dangerous very quickly.

If your system truly isn't keeping up, Bates HVAC is ready to help. We'll diagnose the problem honestly and get you comfortable as quickly as possible.

Please feel free to share this post. It may help someone avoid an unnecessary breakdown during this heat wave.
