Beulah Mine

Beulah Mine The Beulah Mine is a 9,000-acre surface mine complex located two miles south of Beulah, ND and 75 miles northwest of Bismarck, ND.

The facility employees 150 individuals and produces 3.0 million tons of lignite coal annually. It is owned and operated by Dakota Westmoreland, a subsidiary of Westmoreland Coal Company, the nation's oldest independent mining company. One of the hallmarks of the Beulah Mine is its efficiency. As a mine-mouth operation, the mine is able to exclusively supply the adjacent 427 megawatt Coyote Generat

ing Station with all of the lignite coal it needs to meet the station's fuel requirements. As a result, the Coyote Station does not have to pay any freight costs. Dakota Westmoreland also owns and controls a four-mile rail spur that connects the mine and plant to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad’s Stanton line, which it uses to supply the two-unit 75 megawatt Heskett Station, located 74 miles away.
