SACRAMENTO – The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) is calling on licensed contractors to conserve electricity as a record-setting heatwave increases power demand statewide, straining the energy grid.

The California Independent System Operator (CalISO) is asking businesses and residents to limit energy usage, especially between the hours of 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., when demand is typically the highest.

Here are some tips to save electricity and potentially prevent rolling blackouts and outages:

1. Pre-cool your home overnight and in the morning by turning air conditioners down to 72 degrees
2. Keep air conditioning at 78 degrees or higher during peak hours, 3 p.m.-10 p.m.
3. Avoid using major appliances during peak hours
4. Turn off all unnecessary lights
