SSIE students do more. This summer, Samantha Sapio interned with PepsiCo at the Frito-Lay site in nearby Kirkwood. There she was able to apply her industrial engineering background directly to daily warehouse operations to drive process improvements and boost site efficiency. She thanks her managers, teammates and mentors for a truly transformative experience and looks forward to the many exciting challenges and opportunities ahead as she enters her senior year this fall.

Congratulations to PhD ISE students Ragda Bawaneh and Heba Jaradat on their selection to receive the Krishnaswami Srihari Graduate Scholarship for 2026-2027! This scholarship was established in 2020 in honor of Krishnaswami Srihari, our former Dean of the Watson College, thanks to generous contributions of WISE/SSIE alumni and other supporters. This scholarship is reserved for high-performing international PhD students who are majoring in Industrial and Systems Engineering. Congrats again, Ragda and Heba!

Welcome back, Bearcats!! 🐻🐱As we welcome back graduate and undergraduate students at all levels, many are sharing exciting internship stories from this past summer. Justin Mintz, for example, is shown here at Zebra Technologies, where he worked in the Z4Z program and got hands-on experience with several highly impactful projects. He has returned this fall to start his MS focused in Engineering Management, now armed with even more real-world experience. Congrats, Justin!

Huge news as we get ready to conclude the second week of classes ... We are delighted to share that SUNY Distinguished Professor Hiroki Sayama has received the Artificial Life Outstanding Publication of the Decade! Congratulations, Dr. Sayama!

Making this victory even slightly more remarkable, this is in fact the second time that he has won this particular award. The School of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering at Binghamton University is very proud of Dr. Sayama's continuing contributions to academia. Congrats again Dr. Sayama!

We share very sad news that a forefather of the current SSIE School, Dr. Howard Pattee, has passed. He was an incredible intellectual and a very kind man, and tributes are continuing to pour in. Dr. Pattee will be formally recognized (as planned) at the upcoming 2026 Conference on Complex Systems ( ) taking place in Binghamton this October. Not all engineers work in factories... Yusuf Efe Alan recently completed an internship at HSBC, where he gained firsthand exposure to the complexities of Aircraft Financing and Supply Chain Financing to aid him in his future career. He is one of a growing number of engineers who is interested in applying his skill sets to solve challenges in corporate banking. He is also in a specialized dual degree program, at the end of which he will have achieved bachelor's degrees from both Binghamton University and the historic Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) in Turkey.
