With the possibility of winter weather coming in this weekend if you have any doubts that your heat will work now is the time to give us a call and get it checked out. If the roads become officially closed and hazardous we cannot let our service trucks run on them. Here are a few tips for the extreme weather coming and your heating system.
1. If you have a heat pump do not panic if you look at the outside unit and it looks like a block of ice. When the heat pump is running the outdoor units coil is below freezing and with freezing rain ice can build up long before the system runs through its defrost cycle.
If the ice isn't to bad you can place you system in A/C mode and run it that way and it will help melt the ice away. Note you will have to lower the thermostat setting to bring on the A/C.
2. If you have a high efficiency condensing furnace pay attention to the combustion exhaust pipe. These heating system are so efficient that they produce condensate (water) and at these long term below freezing temps they can build up ice to the point it blocks the outlet shutting off the furnace. Just keep an eye on it and make sure it stays clear and free of ice build up.
3. If you have a gas furnace or duel fuel heat pump if the power goes out and you are running your home on a portable generator your furnace should be fine to operate. If you have a duel fuel or hybrid heat pump system that the emergency heat is a gas furnace just switch your system to emergency heat which forces the system to run the furnace only and you should be good to go.
