Stop making this ONE big mistake when building a French drain! 🚫💦
A properly installed French drain should protect your home’s foundation and keep your yard dry for 30+ years. But if your drainage system fails after just 2 or 3 seasons, 9 times out of 10, it comes down to these critical installation errors:
Here is what separates a long-lasting, professional French drain from a clogged, failed system:
1️⃣ The "Burrito Wrap" Filter Fabric (Crucial Step!)
Never just line the bottom or sides of the trench! You MUST completely wrap the washed gravel like a burrito before placing topsoil over it. Non-woven geotextile filter fabric acts as a barrier that keeps fine dirt, clay, and silt out of your gravel core while allowing groundwater to pass through freely.
2️⃣ Use Clean, Washed Gravel Only
Using unwashed "dirty gravel" or mixing backfill dirt into your stone fills the natural void spaces. Always use 3/4" clean, washed crushed stone so water has plenty of room to flow rapidly toward the outlet.
3️⃣ Pipe Holes Face DOWN, Not Up
It might seem counterintuitive, but perforated pipe holes should always face DOWN (toward the 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions). As the groundwater table rises under the trench, water enters the pipe from the bottom and drains away fast without letting stone or debris clog the perforations.
4️⃣ Eliminate Water Traps & Sags
Maintain a minimum 1% slope (at least 1 inch of drop for every 8 to 10 feet of pipe). Dips or sags in the trench bed create low spots where standing water collects, traps sediment, and eventually destroys the drain line.
