We are leaving money on the table on purpose.

Yarbrough & Sons will not install electric tankless water heaters unless very specific criteria are met, and it has nothing to do with the customer. Will has a tankless and likes it, as long as it is gas. Electric is a comfort problem and a wallet problem, because of how they break down and how fast they have seen them fail.

Our target hot water is about 110 to 120 degrees, and Oklahoma city water in fall, winter, and spring can sit at 40 or 50.

That is a 70-degree rise, which only gives you about 1.8 to 2.5 gallons per minute on an electric tankless. That is enough for a shower or a dishwasher or the washer, not all of them. Stack two of those and the shower starts to trickle.

If the house is electric-only, the answer is not an electric tankless. It is a heat pump water heater.

Those units are stupid efficient, they can run more than one appliance at a time, they typically cost less than an electric tankless, and the warranties are better because tank manufacturers already know scale happens. An electric tankless is not worth the money, the heartache, or the headache.

The thing manufacturers skip on electric tankless is scale.

Scale, sediment, and calcium show up in tanks and tankless, gas and electric, and city water here is hard. The only way Yarbrough & Sons will install one is with a full water-treatment system in place, and that is a $15,000 water heater plus treatment. The electric heating element is so short and small that hardness in the water acts like a magnet when you heat it and pulls even more scale to the surface.

We keep getting the same calls every spring, fall, and winter: the grid is down, the house is not livable, and people are worried about groceries, the freezer, no heat, and water lines freezing.

Yarbrough & Sons is the heat, air, and plumbing shop, and there is nothing we can do about any of that without power. That is why we are getting into whole-home generators. The necessary thing is the power.
