Everything’s bigger in Texas, including the weather challenges.

In the latest episode, DTN’s Renny Vandewege sits down with TxDOT’s Matthew Heinze to discuss how forecasting helps teams prepare for hurricanes, flooding, wildfire behavior, dust storms, tornado threats, and even snow/ice events.

From staging barricades to making lane-closure decisions and understanding what floodwater can do beneath the road surface, this conversation shows how weather intelligence supports real operational decisions.

A “quiet” hurricane season can still be a high-loss season.

In Insurance Journal, Renny Vandewege, DTN GM, Weather and Climate Intelligence, explains why lower storm counts can create a false sense of security, and why secondary hazards like inland flooding, storm surge, extreme rainfall, and tornadoes are increasingly driving real-world impact and insurance losses.

He also shares why relying on category alone does not capture today’s risk landscape, and how more comprehensive approaches like the DTN Hurricane Threat Index can help translate multiple hazards into clearer, earlier decision support.

5/22 - Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are forecast today in the Gulf as moisture lingers in the region and is aided by a passing frontal boundary and associated low-pressure just to the north. Activity will favor the areas near the Mississippi Delta, with drier conditions further east as well as in far western areas. By the evening hours, these central areas are forecast to become drier, while further storms may move off the Texas coast overnight. Saturday will then see further chances for showers and storms in western portions of the basin, as well as along and offshore much of the US Gulf Coast from eastern TX to FL, with activity favoring areas north of 27N. Gentle to moderate southeasterly winds will be seen today and Saturday, with a small area of fresh winds possible along the southern half of the Texas coast. Wave heights of three to four feet in height will be the norm both days.

Weather decisions at live events rarely happen on a calm timeline.

On Episode 116 of the Event Safety Alliance Podcast, Danielle Hernandez and Tami Richter talk with Renny Vandewege, DTN GM, Weather and Climate Intelligence, about a key survey finding: many event weather decisions are made within 48 hours of the event, and often in the moment.

They cover lightning, radar, event-specific trigger thresholds, WBGT for heat safety, and why having a meteorologist in the loop matters, plus how DTN Weather Hub helps turn weather intelligence into action.

5/21- Lingering moisture and instability across the Gulf region will lead to chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms across the northwestern Gulf today, while a weak low-pressure system moving offshore will further aid in the production of storms in the northwestern Gulf this afternoon. Scattered showers and isolated storms are still possible in central and eastern portions of the Gulf as well, with this activity favoring areas near the Mississippi Delta. Strong storms with gusts in excess of 45 kts are possible. Friday will see a risk for scattered showers and isolated storms across the Gulf, though activity is forecast to be less organized than that seen today. Gentle to moderate southeasterly winds will be seen today, with some fresh winds along the southern Texas coast. Friday will then see moderate south-southeasterly winds across the Gulf. Wave heights of three to four feet will be the norm both days.
