Growth doesn’t happen in the comfort zone. Neither does leadership.

SkyWater’s Austin fab, Fab 25, has a long history of transformation. From its IDM roots to now a key part of a U.S.-based supply chain, the site continues to evolve to meet growing demand for secure, scalable semiconductor manufacturing.

AnhThu Tran's 28-year journey reflects that same evolution. A self-described introvert, she chose to step into challenges that pushed her beyond her comfort zone. That decision shaped her path from engineer to Head of Production during a pivotal time for Fab 25. Her perspective is simple. The moments that feel the most uncomfortable are often the ones that matter most. “Leadership is a skill you build. The best opportunities are often the ones that feel the hardest to take.”

Strong momentum for U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and an exciting path forward for SkyWater Technology! This recent article from the Star Tribune highlights some key themes shaping our industry:

• Domestic semiconductor manufacturing is accelerating, supported by policy, investment, and growing demand

• SkyWater continues to scale as a trusted U.S. foundry, now the largest pure-play provider in the country

• Rapid progress in next-generation technologies like quantum computing

SkyWater CEO Thomas Sonderman rightly calls semiconductors “the new steel,” underpinning everything from national security to AI and advanced computing. We’re proud to be part of a team helping build that foundation, and even more excited about what comes next.

When SkyWater’s merger with IonQ is completed, the Bloomington-based semiconductor company will operate as an independent subsidiary, continuing to build quantum computing business.

This is exactly the conversation the industry needs right now.

While advanced nodes drive headlines, foundational semiconductors are what enable real-world system performance, longevity, and readiness. They are deeply embedded across defense platforms, and their availability can’t be taken for granted.

Strengthening secure, domestic access to these technologies is a mission assurance imperative. Progress is underway, but aligning policy, procurement, and manufacturing capacity will be key to closing the gap.

Quantum scaling won’t be won by lithographic shrink. In most quantum architectures, smaller nodes aren’t the primary lever. Materials quality, routing density, integration discipline, and system stability are.

In his latest blog, SkyWater GM and SVP of Foundry Solutions and Technology Platforms Bassel Haddad shares why 200 mm infrastructure, advanced packaging, and integration architecture are emerging as critical enablers of sustainable quantum scale, preserving hard-won physics gains while creating a path to economic leverage.

Quantum is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. Whether its value is anchored on U.S. soil will be a manufacturing decision.

In Part 2 of SkyWater’s quantum manufacturing series, SVP of Strategy Ross Miller looks ahead to what comes next as quantum technologies move toward real-world deployment, and why manufacturing readiness will determine who leads.

Sustained U.S. leadership in quantum will depend on deliberate investment in domestic manufacturing infrastructure, trusted facilities, and adaptable business models that can evolve alongside emerging technologies.

By Ross Miller, SVP Strategy, SkyWater Technology This post is the second in a two-part series on the future of U.S. quantum manufacturing.   The early phase of quantum manufacturing has proven that onshore capability is both possible and necessary. The next phase will determine whether the United ...
