🎈 Helium may be invisible, but its role in semiconductor manufacturing is anything but small.

Polar Semiconductor was recently featured on 60 Minutes as part of a deeper look at the global helium shortage and why it matters to industries most people may not immediately associate with the gas—including semiconductor manufacturing.

In this clip, Polar President & COO Surya Iyer takes viewers inside our Bloomington fab and explains just how essential helium is to semiconductor production.

Helium plays a role in hundreds of process steps, helping equipment maintain the clean, stable conditions needed to manufacture reliable chips. And the stakes are only getting higher.

As demand grows from AI data centers, electrification, defense, automotive, and other critical technologies, semiconductor production is expanding right along with it.

That makes access to a reliable domestic helium supply an increasingly important part of the broader U.S. technology and manufacturing ecosystem.

It also reinforces a larger lesson: Resilient supply chains depend on more than access to critical materials. They depend on having strong semiconductor manufacturing capacity here at home.

Expanding domestic production helps reduce exposure to global disruptions while strengthening the infrastructure behind technologies essential to our economy and national security.

We’re grateful to 60 Minutes for shining a light on an issue that rarely makes headlines but has very real implications for advanced manufacturing.

📢 Polar Semiconductor is excited to announce a new collaboration with IC-Link by imec to provide 8-inch production of enhancement-mode (e-mode) GaN devices at our Bloomington, Minnesota, foundry.

The collaboration brings together imec’s leadership in GaN process, device, and epitaxy technology, IC-Link’s design-to-manufacturing services, and Polar’s commercial manufacturing expertise and production capabilities.

The result is a scalable path that can help customers move from early access and prototyping into high-volume manufacturing. 

For Polar, this collaboration is another important step in advancing our GaN roadmap while strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity for technologies that are becoming increasingly critical to the U.S. economy and national security.

As demand grows for more efficient, high-performance power solutions, GaN is becoming increasingly important across strategic markets such as AI infrastructure, aerospace and defense, automotive, and industrial systems.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of National Nanotechnology Day, an annual celebration held on 10/9 in honor of the nanometer scale: 10⁻⁹ meters. 🔬

It’s a fitting reminder that some of the smallest technologies can have an enormous impact on the world around us.

At Polar, that idea hits close to home. Advances at incredibly small scales help make possible the power semiconductors, sensors, and integrated technologies that support everything from AI infrastructure and automobiles to industrial systems and national defense.

National Nano Day is also an opportunity to recognize the scientists, engineers, technicians, researchers, and students who continue pushing the limits of what’s possible and inspiring the next generation to think very, very small in pursuit of very big ideas.
