What does "aging in place" actually mean?

At its core, aging in place means being able to remain in your own home safely, comfortably, and independently as your needs change over time.

The challenge is that homes aren't always prepared for life's next chapter.

At Boast, we help people understand how their home is working for them today, and how it may need to evolve for the years ahead.

Our approach combines occupational therapy expertise, thoughtful design, and skilled construction to create solutions that support:

✔ Safety
✔ Function
✔ Independence
✔ Peace of mind

Every home is different. Every person is different. That's why we always start by understanding both.

If wondering how your home can better support you or a family member, now or in the future, we offer a free home evaluation and are always happy to take a look.

If you are helping look after an aging parent, you know the delicate balance of support and worry.

You find yourself scanning their home every time you visit. Noticing the slight wobble when they push up from a chair, or the way they hold onto the wall when walking down the hallway.

When we collaborate with families, our care-informed approach focuses on removing hidden friction in their day-to-day routine. This starts with a comprehensive human and home assessment, identifying problem areas and creating solutions specific to their body.

The result? A grab bar positioned in the place they naturally reach for, custom-sized for their arm length. These seemingly simple changes significantly lower fall risk and improve functionality.

If you’re curious about how we can support your family member, we offer a free home evaluation and are always happy to take a look.

I have always had a hard time watching money get wasted.

This is why we approach this work the way we do.

When we modify a home for someone aging in place, we are not just thinking about the present. We are thinking about the full arc. How this home needs to function for the next few years, and what it needs to look like when it's eventually time to sell.

Those two things are more connected than most people realize.

Much of the work that makes a home safer and easier to live in, also makes a home more appealing to buyers. This can include better lighting, smooth transitions between floors or a refreshed bathroom.

When the time does come to move, the changes that drive the most return usually aren't the big ones. More often it's fresh paint. Refinished floors. Removing what's accumulated over decades and letting the home breathe again. Work that takes days, not months.

We think about both phases, the living and the leaving, and try to make sure the money spent on one isn't wasted on the other.

The bathroom is where we see a great deal of risk in the homes we visit.

The bathroom is used every single day. Often first thing in the morning, when the body is stiffest and the mind is least sharp.

A few things that come up often:

Stepping over a tub ledge demands more balance and single-leg stability than most people realize, especially when wet.

Wet floors and smooth surfaces give almost no warning before they become a problem.

Getting up from a low toilet seat puts significant strain on the hips and knees, more so over time.

Tight spaces leave little room to catch yourself if something goes wrong.

We don't always recommend a full renovation. Sometimes it is a grab bar in the right place. Sometimes a handheld showerhead, a threshold change, a different mat. We look at what is actually happening in the space and suggest what genuinely makes sense.

Sometimes that's a lot. Sometimes it's very little.

But it is always worth a look.

You've navigated a lot of chapters together.

New homes. New routines. Kids, careers, changes you planned for… and plenty you didn't.
This is one more chapter. And like the others, it goes better when you face it together, with forethought.
The homes that work best for couples as they age aren't just safe for one person. They are genuinely comfortable for both. That takes intention. It takes someone asking the right questions about both of your lives, not just one.
That's something we take seriously at Boast. Because the goal has never been just to accommodate, it's to help you keep living well.
Both of you.

What do you do when the home that carried you through 30 years needs a little help carrying you through the next 30?

That's the question we built Boast around.

We've found that staying home isn't about turning your space into something clinical. It's about what we call “invisible accessibility”; designing your home so it stays beautiful, functional, and deeply yours, while quietly providing the safety you need in the background.

A home shouldn't be a source of worry. It should be the foundation for the next chapter.

If you’re wondering what’s possible for your home, we’re happy to take a look.

I didn't start in construction. I started in care.

Over the years, I kept seeing the same pattern. Thoughtful recommendations, good intentions, real concern for the people involved. But when it came time to actually change the home, something got lost.

Not because people didn't care. But because the system wasn't built to connect care and construction.

That's why we built Boast.

To close that gap and make sure the home truly works for the person living in it.

If you've navigated this for yourself or someone you love, I'd love to hear what that experience was like.
