Unveiling a recently completed remodel and décor refresh at Schmitz's Economart in Spooner, WI — a store we’ve had the privilege of remodeling and expanding over the years.

At 68,000 square feet, Schmitz’s Economart stands as one of the largest independent grocery stores in northern Wisconsin. What began as a family-owned market has grown — through major expansions in 1997 and 2004 — into a true regional destination, blending small-town hospitality with big-box convenience.

Through multiple remodels and additions, our team has been honored to support that continued growth. This latest refresh builds on that legacy — elevating the customer experience with updated finishes and a clean, modern aesthetic while preserving the character that makes this store special.

Family-owned for three generations, Ted and Laura Schmitz continue to invest in both their store and their community — supporting local initiatives, partnering with regional suppliers, and providing a 24/7 shopping destination for the Spooner area.

We’re grateful to play a role in the ongoing evolution of this iconic Northwoods store!

Starting off the new year with another grand opening! In just 3 months, Ankeny Builders helped convert a former 14,000-square-foot Walgreens into a new grocery store at the corner of L Street and 23rd Street in Omaha, Nebraska.

Congratulations to SpartanNash and the Nuestra Familia team on their sixth location and a successful opening — and thank you for trusting Ankeny Builders.

📣 GRAND OPENING ANNOUNCEMENT!

We’re pleased to announce the grand opening of Supermercado Nuestra Familia-Topeka, which took place on December 6th.

This 50,000-square-foot grocery store came together in an accelerated 4 month timeline – transforming a vacant building into a modern, vibrant supermarket designed to serve the community for years to come.

Meeting this aggressive schedule took exceptional teamwork, coordination, and dedication by everyone involved. We’re proud of the finished product and honored to be a part of a project that brings fresh opportunity and quality food to Topeka.

Congratulations to Supermercado Nuestra Familia-Topeka on a successful opening – we wish you continued success!

✨ Project Showcase: Wayne's Foods Plus - Webster, WI ✨

We're pleased to share one of our recently completed projects for Wayne's Foods Plus . This 11-month transformation included two new additions totaling 6,000 SF and 22,000 SF of remodeled space. This project required significant planning and teamwork by everyone involved to ensure the store remained operational throughout construction.

On August 11th, the community celebrated the grand reopening, revealing a modernized layout, expanded departments, and a host of upgrades, including:

✅ 4,000 SF of additional sales area
✅ Fully remodeled Sales Area with a new painted, open structure ceiling
✅ Expanded Wine & Spirits Department featuring a larger Beer Cave
✅ Relocated Customer Service to also serve dual functions, including point of sale for Wine & Spirits
✅ Relocated ADA Restrooms facilities at the front of store
✅ Redesigned layout and updated finishes to the Deli Prep
✅ Updated Finishes to the Produce Prep
✅ New Cold-Formed Steel Framed addition to accommodate the Sandwhich Barn Seating Area, Sales, & New Deli Cooler
✅ Back Room Demolition and Structural Steel modifications to allow for expanded aisles
✅ Relocated and improved Meat Prep
✅ New Masonry addition containing a larger, more efficient Storage "back room", Storage Freezer, Meat Cooler, Liquor Storage, Compressor Room, Corporate Offices, Break Room, and Employe Restroom.
✅ New Fire Sprinkling System throughout the existing building and additions
✅ New Electrical Service, Electrical & IT throughout the store
✅ New Compressor Rooms & Refrigerated Cases
✅ New Front Facade & Exterior improvements

Project Spotlight: Nilssen's - Zumbrota, MN

Just over a year ago Nilssen’s celebrated the grand re-opening at the Zumbrota store!

This project consisted of an 8,000 SF masonry addition with steel bar joist roof structure. The addition was constructed to accommodate a new liquor store, large beer cave, employee offices, break room, and frozen department with a new large storage freezer. The main entrance of the store was relocated to provide a joined vestibule for both separate entrances of the grocery and liquor store. A Caribou Coffee was added to the store to serve in store shoppers and a drive-thru was built to serve those on the go. The sales area of the existing 20,000 SF store featured a complete remodel from floor to ceiling - new refrigerated cases were installed, an entire shelving reset, relocated check stands, updated restrooms, and new wall décor and finishes throughout. The project was strategically phased to keep the store and all of the departments fully-operational throughout construction.

Ankeny Builders, Inc. assisted with the initial store planning & design, provided Pre-Construction services, and managed the Construction throughout the 9 month project. Our self-perform crews completed an extensive amount of work from concrete to demolition, light steel er****on, metal stud framing, drywall, rough and finish carpentry, and acoustical ceilings. A job well done by everyone involved!
