National Skilled Trades Day honors the people in our country who do work like we do here at Hewes.

At Hewes & Company, the people doing the work are the people who own the company. Fifty one years in, that still feels like the right way to do it. To every carpenter, cabinetmaker, finisher, installer, and machinist on our crew- and to every tradesperson out there keeping this vital work alive- thank you. The trades built this coast, and they’re still building it.

Our shared ownership runs through every decision we make, every nail we drive, and every trip we make to a client’s site. This project has so many of those “Hewes touches” throughout- a wine cellar, a wood-paneled study, and a cook’s kitchen are just a few! It’s a real display of stellar craftsmanship.

recently completed a landmark project for not just their portfolio- for Maine wooden boatbuilding as a whole. played a significant role in building OUZEL, a 95’ world-cruising super yacht. It’s all behind-the-scenes, but our CNC department helps wooden boatbuilding companies craft boats, from the smallest to the biggest.

For a large residential new construction project on the Hudson River, the Hewes cabinet shop was charged with solving a problem.

The problem? The custom ceiling panels built for the home were proving to be heavy. The members of the cabinet shop had to get creative, and they had a trick up their sleeve coming from boatbuilding backgrounds.

They applied their marine and woodworking know-how and applied a solution that proved to be pretty genius: instead of using solid wood, they applied a wood veneer over structural foam core drastically reducing the weight while maintaining the appearance of solid wood.

The result is gorgeous, modern, and seamless! Plus, the application requires some curved lines, and the structural foam lends itself well to curves.

These are essentially lightweight composite panels built and finished in our shop then installed on site. Did you know that Hewes has a long history of panelizing systems to accommodates social circumstances like islands, distance, weather, etc.? We’re experts at it!
