BWH Platelet and Megakaryocyte Group

BWH Platelet and Megakaryocyte Group We study platelets and megakaryocytes in health and disease! Labs include: Italiano, Battinelli, Machlus, and Giannini

Circulating blood platelets are specialized cells that function to prevent bleeding and minimize blood vessel injury. As such, platelets play a critical role in both normal and disease physiology. Large progenitor cells in the bone marrow called megakaryocytes (MKs) release platelets by extending long processes, proplatelets, into sinusoidal blood vessels. Some of the topics we study are:
- How an

d why megakaryocytes make platelets
- How different disease states such as inflammation and cancer alter megakaryocyte and platelet function
- What regulates platelet life-span

Our goal is to create novel therapeutics to treat thrombocytopenia and platelet disorders.
