iGEM Dundee 2014

iGEM Dundee 2014 We are the University of Dundee's 4th entry into the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition.

From the University of Dundee iGEM website:
Synthetic Biology is a modern, forward-looking field with its roots in molecular genetics that aims to allow the design of new biological systems. It is a multidisciplinary field that involves fundamental science such as chemistry, biology, physics and mathematics, coupled with the principles of engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and com

puter science. Whole systems biology and modelling approaches are also intimately linked with Synthetic Biology. An iGEM summer project is one of the most involved, labour intensive, but most rewarding science projects a student can be involved in. Teams of around 10 students must work together not only to produce a novel piece of science but must also consider societal, political and safety aspects of their work. The Lung Rangers were very sad to hear about the loss of David Carver last week. David was a really brave, inspirational and lovely man. He was very interested and supportive of our iGEM project, and our project was all the better for talking to him and getting his input. David was even kind enough to give up his time and be interviewed on STV with us last year. Yesterday evening there was an article in the Dundee Evening telegraph that we wanted to share with everyone who supported our project, about David one of our lovely honorary Lung Rangers.

The Lung Rangers have arrived back in Dundee after having the most amazing experience in Boston for the iGEM competition. We would like to thank iGEM for their wonderful hospitality and on making this jamboree so memorable! It was nice to meet all the different teams and learn about their great projects. We wish them all the best in the future! This marks the end of our official iGEM journey and we would like to thank everyone who has helped us along the way. Particular thanks to Tracy, Frank and Dyce who have always been there to mentor us. And to the MMB department for putting up with us in the lab throughout the summer. We would also like to thank the local CF community for all of their support, the project could not have been possible without them.
