We’re excited to share our recently completed Kendall Square Wellness Center project, now up on our website. The Wellness Center was recognized as ’s 2021 Best of Year finalist in the fitness category. Link in bio for more info and pics 📸.

For this project, we were commissioned to design a health center for a global tech company’s burgeoning Kendall Square campus in Cambridge, MA. The space includes a gym, sound-proofed yoga and group fitness studio, a massage and meditation suite, on-site primary care facilities, as well as staff offices, locker rooms, and a micro kitchen.

In keeping with the thematic program and motifs of the other office floors, the design team was tasked with finding inspiration in the New England landscape. Sweat, steam, and rejuvenation found poetic parallel with the coastal tidal pools of the region. The plan is composed of pebble shaped forms and the floor is immersive with incidents of intense color and light. The circulation reaches out between the pods in order to bring light and City views into the deep floor plate.

We recently completed the Boston Headquarters for Ten Percent Happier, a web-based company focused on teaching self-improvement through guided mindful meditation. The 5,200 sqft fit-out integrates the unlikely pairing of an open office plan with a public-facing multipurpose meditation and meeting space.

The sculptural, spur-shaped meditation room was designed to expand and contract in response to shifting group size, type of meditation, and time of day. An acoustic fabric wall system opens, closes, and shapes the space as required.

When completely closed, the interior is a secluded and calming zone for small group or independent meditation. When completely open the space can host large group classes, presentations, and open-house events. The color palette is bright and calm, punctuated by hanging greenery 🌱.

One of the enduring values of the Triple Decker is the housing typology’s spatial efficiency; three identical floor plans stacked atop one another allow maximum living space on a minimum land area. Our design proposal envisions a deep energy retrofit and the addition of a compact rear unit as a model for how these iconic New England dwellings can also become energy efficient.
This ‘back stack’, along with the upgrades to the existing units, balances occupant health and comfort; embodied carbon and energy dissipation; upfront costs and long term returns, via replicable and scalable strategies. Beyond its active systems, the new rear unit employs passive strategies including daylighting and natural ventilation. The fully electric Triple Decker’s carbon footprint will be further minimized as grid sources become more renewable.
Our proposal encourages owners to undertake the investment at the time that aging building systems are being upgraded. In addition, existing tenants will benefit from improved outdoor space while new rear unit tenants are offered a novel way of inhabiting this iconic building type.
