It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the tragic and sudden death of UW Bothell alumna Anna “Maxx” Lopez. Maxx graduated in 2018 with a degree in Biology.

Remembered by many in the UW Bothell community with incredible warmth, Maxx was a staff member at Husky Village, a classmate, an alum and a friend. She brought joy to those who were fortunate enough to know her and her loss is felt deeply by countless faculty, staff, alumni and students at UW Bothell.

Maxx’s death, which appears to be the result of domestic violence, occurred this past Monday, July 5th. Her murder was senseless, and it underscores the realities of intimate partner violence for women and especially women of color.

Still, the cause of her death will not overshadow the friendship, kindness and laughter that are Maxx’s legacy. We invite you to share any memories or sympathies here, and we offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones grieving her death. 💜💛

We must use our power as academics and privilege of being educated to demand justice, reform, and accountability now.

“We recognize that our academic institutions and research collaborations -- despite big talk about diversity, equity, and inclusion -- have ultimately failed Black people. Demands for justice have been met with gradualism and tokenism, as well as diversity and inclusion initiatives that -- while sometimes well-intentioned -- have had little meaningful impact on the lived experiences of Black students, staff, researchers, and faculty... Anti-Blackness is pervasive throughout academia, and the number of students and faculty in particle physics and other subfields make this very clear.“

Stewardship, Education, Reform, Justice and Solidarity!

Tomorrow June 10th, 2020 we strike!
What does this look like? Pausing from meetings, emails, group chats, research, classes and such. Maybe instead open a dialogue, start a book, listen to a podcast, disucss changes you can make in your academic community or field of study. As it is finals week please consider what is best for you and do reach out to your professors.

We need to be conscious of ways to elevate the heavy lifting our black members of academia are expected to take on in advocating and supporting justice. There needs to be more inclusion talks, seminars and it needs to be integrated into the curriculum. In addition, there should be requirements for degree majors to take classes in black history and social justice. Let us take a day to pause!
