What is Structural Engineering? Structural Engineering is the application of equations and models in determining the ability of materials to resist various loading, combination of loadings, and the suitability of selected materials in a given project. Every project that you see, from the pedestrian bridge at the park to the glass building downtown, has started as a concept on a piece of paper. While architects develop the concept of the project, it is the duty of the structural engineer to turn such dreams into reality. Structural Engineering is the art & science of efficiently and effectively manipulating various resources and materials to improve our lives in modern day society. It is the ability of the structural engineer to coordinate materials, monies, and manpower to develop and maintain group and business relationships, maintain and improve the local or regional infrastructure, and improve the quality of living. Structural Engineering is a fine blend of what could be, what can be, and what will be! All of these projects need the expertise of a structural engineer! Would you like to expand your master suite or add a walk-in closet? How about a garage for your golf cart or RV? Is it time to add a mother-in-law suite? Do you have concrete crumbling off your building? Did your structure have a fire and needs repairs? Discovered unexplained moisture infiltration, a wall cracking, or wind damage? Do you need a new mezzanine storage level in your warehouse? Are you looking to build a new house or commercial building and need some direction? Did you start a project and now you need help with the governmental red-tape? Carotti Engineering was founded in 2007 by Renato "Ren" Carotti, a licensed professional engineer. With prior experience as a certified welder, a wood truss assembler, quality control observer and inspector, engineering mentor and manager, Ren Carotti’s approach to engineering is to utilize a practical, common sense method in the design, construction, and investigation of projects while upholding and advancing the principles of the structural engineering field. His structural engineering experience includes projects using structural steel, concrete, masonry, timber, and pre-engineered lumber. Carotti Engineering can provide analysis and design of custom members and connection design, structural damage assessments and structural forensic services and consultations. Carotti, PE

Opening, operating, and maintaining my own structural engineering company has taught me the business side of engineering. I obtain and execute work contracts, manage business and professional relationships, and provide engineering services to clients in the construction, renovation, and damage assessment fields. I enjoy helping clients realize their projects, big or small, and look to advance the structural engineering field in my own small way. Renato Carotti is a member of several engineering and business organizations including:

American Society of Civil Engineers – Florida Section
Structural Engineering Institute
Florida Engineering Society
American Institute of Steel Construction
International Code Council
American Concrete Institute
American Wood Council
American Forest & Paper Association
NSPE
American Design Drafting Association
American Digital Design Association

Renato Carotti is also registered with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying as a Model Engineer and maintains a current Council Record. This aids reciprocation for licensure in other state jurisdictions. So what does all this mean? It means that Carotti Engineering is qualified to handle your project, big or small. You know, I’ve joked for years that as a structural engineer, I just punch numbers into a calculator and call it a day!

But with AI now able to run calculations faster (and sometimes better) than we can… it does make me wonder, where does that leave us?

Is engineering just math? Or is it the judgment behind the math?

Because the real value of a licensed professional isn’t just solving equations, it’s knowing which equations matter, when assumptions break down, how materials behave in the real world, and when something “looks right” on paper but feels off in practice.

There’s also the responsibility side: stamping a design means standing behind it with your name, your experience, and your accountability.

AI can learn patterns. It can even mimic decision-making. But can it truly replicate the intuition built from years of field experience, mistakes, and lessons learned?

Curious what others think:

Are we heading toward a shift in what expertise means, or is the “human element” more valuable than ever?

Hello Everybody,
In recent times, construction has been crazy, what with material prices shooting up and construction trades having long lead times. One of those trades, pre-engineered metal plated wood trusses, have seen some extraordinary lead times, with some companies being out a full year!

Clients have turned to me asking for an alternative to roof trusses, suggesting "conventional frame". Most of the general public understand roof construction of this manner, with rafters and joists and beams, etc. etc. But here in SW Florida, the "continuous load path" concept (i.e. everything is connected together and tied down) falls apart. At each and every joint in the roof system, some type of connector is required to hold everything together. With the high, high wind loads in the area, typical, "off-the-shelf" connections don't work anymore!

Case in point: This 3+ Million Dollar home in Placida, FL was constructed with a "conventional frame" style roof system. When Hurricane Ian came through, the roof came clean off the house!!

Moral of the story: We're not in Kansas anymore Toto, don't cut corners in construction just to save some time! When using conventional frame, custom connections have to be designed where off-the-shelf hardware doesn't work. (translation : even more time and more money). It's best to stick with a tried and true strong roof construction method: wood trusses!

We at Carotti Engineering would like to wish Everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year !

An acquaintance of mine recently wanted to know why Engineers take so many vacations. "...What!?!..." was my first reaction, but after that moment I responded that Engineers, like Doctors, Lawyers, Real Estate Professionals etc., have to stay current in their respective fields and take what are called "Continuing Education" classes. For engineers, that's 30 hours per renewal cycle. We take the time to better ourselves, so that we are better able to serve you, the general public. (Vacations...pff..I wish...)
