Drought conditions are continuing to expand across the region, with the Ohio River serving as a notable dividing line in the severity of impacts. Current forecasts indicate less than one inch of total rainfall through mid-May, allowing these dry conditions to persist. As vegetation becomes increasingly dry and vulnerable to fire spread, additional burn bans may be implemented in affected areas.

Visiting a location stamped in weather history. While out in Ohio I had to stop in Xenia, the location of the most prolific tornado of the April 3, 1974 super outbreak. This tornado was so violent Ted Fujita originally considered adding an F6 rating for it, but after careful consideration he decided F5 was the highest a tornado could go which is where the tornado’s rating sits today.

This is one of the most renowned tornadoes, if not the most renowned, in weather history. Anytime we have the chance to visit historical weather locations we will always take the chance to do so!

⛈ What exactly do storms look like at night? Well here's the answer! At night storms are hidden in complete darkness with only half second bursts of lightning illuminating the storm. This makes it very difficult to identify crucial features like wall clouds and tornadoes and is exactly why we say not to wait to see a tornado to take action. Sometimes you will never see it!

This is the highest level tornado watch and is only issued a couple times per year when confidence in dangerous storms is high. We are staged in southern Illinois waiting on storms to initiate.
