Super cold temps are a challenge to heat pumps. This is why:
When it's in heating mode, the pump takes heat from the outdoor air, then transfers it to the refrigerant coolant. Next the compressor pressurizes the refrigerant, increases the air's temperature and then spreads it through your home. If temperatures drop below 32 degrees, a heat pump may struggle to extract heat from the outside air.

Consider a backup heat source such as a gas furnace or electric resistance coil heater for these unusually cold days. Remember it is unsafe to bring gas grills or anything that uses an LP tank into your house. And if you decide to use a space heater, be sure that the room you use it in is well ventilated.

Extremely cold temperatures will test your system! Do a quick check to head off problems before they start - Briefly run the system in heat mode- are the controls are operating correctly? Do you hear any unusual sounds? Check that your filter is clean, and if you have any problems, call me at 678-887-1655.

Do you know why replacing your furnace filter is crucial to your HVAC system’s efficiency and to your comfort?

Your system will run more efficiently. An air filter that is clogged with dust, dirt, and animal hair makes your furnace and air conditioner work harder to move air through your home. That means higher electric bills!

A dirty air filter allows dust, dander and mold to circulate through your home. If anyone in your family has asthma, allergies or other respiratory issues, it can worsen their condition.

When your system has to work harder due to a dirty filter, it can cause your system to overheat and burn out. The strain placed on the blower and the entire HVAC unit can lead to premature failure of your system.

Make changing your filter a part of your regular monthly home maintenance! If you have pets, you may need to change it more frequently. Save $$ on your energy bill, breathe cleaner air, and extend the life of your HVAC system.

Murphy and Brasstown when the mountain laurels open up and turn our mountain sides into a sea of blooms! Warm weather coming. It's a good time to check your filters and think about replacing older systems.

Figuring out what type of residential AC system you need can be tough, especially when you aren't familiar with AC system purchases. Realistically, how many air conditioners have you bought in your life? At the very most, it could be three or four. So, you likely aren't an expert. If you don't deal with AC terms, repairs or replacements on a daily basis, knowing what AC system to buy can be frazzling. It's a task you may need and want to consult a professional on.

Now, having said that, you should at least have a working knowledge of what you need. If you're in the market for a residential AC system, these tips can give you a general idea of what to consider before making your purchase:

Consider Ducts
Before you start thinking of AC units, you need to check your ducts and make sure that they're working. If you don't have ducts, or if they are too old and damaged for you to use, then you're going to need a different type of AC system. Aside from this, your ducts will determine the proper equipment and other accessories you may need for your new HVAC system.

The Most Common System
The most common and popular residential cooling unit is a central air conditioner. Central air uses a split system to provide comfortable indoor air. This split system is made up of a part that goes inside and another part that goes outside. However, if your house is not equipped with air conditioning ducts, your only option for cooling the home may be to use a mini-split air conditioning unit installed in each room you want to cool.
.......
Size
Choose the right size for your HVAC system. The size will help save money on your monthly cooling cost during the hot months. The best way to do this is to measure the length and width of your living area, and determine the square footage of your house. Then, armed with this information, you can call your local HVAC technician and they can help you determine the right size air conditioner you need.

Maintenance
Consider maintenance needs when thinking about buying an HVAC unit. Remember that most AC units need yearly tune-ups in the spring to get it ready for the summer. Plus, inspections will also serve to keep parts in good condition and replace them when necessary.

Summer Humidity is Here!

Heat pumps and air conditioning units draw heat and water v***r from the air, but there’s a limit to their cooling capacity. When the outdoor temps are high and the humidity is high – like what we’re experiencing now – the equipment has to work harder to compensate.

You may need a higher capacity system if…
…you’re experiencing mold and mildew growth, especially in your bathrooms
…your utility bills are higher, and indoors it stills feels warm even when your air conditioning is running
…your allergies are worse, and those with breathing problems are having a harder time than normal

Call JV Heating & Air Conditioning for a free estimate to replace your system with a higher capacity system.

DID YOU KNOW...?
Replacing a unit that is 10- to 15-years-old may reduce natural gas or electricity costs by 30 to 50%. That's $$$ saved every month on your utility bills!
