In 1947, a physicist, an architect, and a sculptor embarked on a mission to build a house powered entirely by sunlight. 🏠 ☀️

Physicist Maria Telkes and architect Eleanor Raymond designed the groundbreaking Dover Sun House in Massachusetts, with funding from sculptor Amelia Peabody.

Their revolutionary design used an ingenious solution for storing solar heat - Glauber's salt (sodium sulfate) contained in glass-walled containers along the south-facing wall.

The salt had a remarkable property: it could absorb solar energy during sunny days and release it as heat during cold nights, maintaining comfortable temperatures without electricity.

This passive solar heating system was decades ahead of its time, coming 30 years before the 1970s energy crisis would renew interest in alternative energy sources.

The sun-powered home generated international headlines and established Telkes as the "Sun Queen" of solar research.

Yet success proved fleeting. Within three years, the salt began corroding its containers, causing leaks that ultimately doomed the experiment.

Despite its premature end, the Dover Sun House remains a pivotal moment in renewable energy history, demonstrating both the promise and challenges of early solar technology.

The visionary project laid crucial groundwork for modern passive solar design and thermal energy storage systems used today.
