February 11th is National Inventors day and we are recognizing the inventor the O-ring!

In 1933, Niels Christensen was tasked with developing reliable seals for hydraulic braking systems at Midland Steel Products in Cleveland, Ohio. After tireless experimentation in the lab, Christensen discovered that a circular rubber gasket with a cross-sectional diameter smaller than the groove it's housed in created a tight, dependable seal. Though he didn't fully comprehend the physics behind it, the O-ring as we know it was born.

At first, his employer dismissed the O-ring as an anomaly. But during WWII, the seal saved the aviation industry millions of dollars and greatly improved reliability. The O-ring became an industry standard that still seals everything from rocket boosters to garden hoses!

The resistance to chemicals is nearly universal and compares to that of PTFE but the advantage of FFKM is the combination of the chemical and thermal stability of PTFE with the elastic properties of an elastomer material.
