MarineBiolochicks We're just a couple of non-practicing marine biologists who spent the pandemic science-ing around the New England tide pools and are now writing a field guide.

Come science with us! We're on TikTok and Instagram We decided we had way too much time on our hands during the pandemic so why not do some science. We're conducting a population and diversity study of the intertidal zone of the Northshore of Massachusetts. We've designated six sampling sites from Salem to Ipswich and monitor each site once per month at low tide, identifying the

flora and fauna we find in designated transects at each site. Turns out, the State of MA is not answering their phones during the pandemic so we are unable to obtain collecting permits at this time. Seriously, I called three times and emailed twice. No worries, we are making due for now. And follow us on TikTok and Instagram . The videos are for fun, the science is real. -Gabby & Mae

Our love letter to the ocean: We love you no matter the season; Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall, but most of all, we'd rather be in our shorts and flip flops while enjoying you.

It was a bitter cold day recently that we ventured to the Cape to see what Winter had wrought. We found the Brewster flats completely frozen over with huge slabs of ice chunks piled up on each other and most everything completely frozen over. Mother Nature is WILD!

Happy Valentine's Day to all. We love you, we love the ocean, the beach, the tide pools, F ICE and F racism.

Scouting locations on Cape Cod for our next field guide (where's the 1st you ask? Patience!!)
1. Brewster, MA
2. Two barnacle species - gray and acorn
3. Dunlin (but also maybe a sanderling but I think dunlin)
4. Whelk egg case! Likely from a knobbed whelk
5. Seen in Sandwich, MA. Can anyone explain? Why are the marshes "planted" with contaminated shellfish? Just poor wording and they are just there? Help!
6. Happy biologist

This is an important conversation. What are your thoughts?

CERF and the Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies have sent a letter to OSTP regarding the implementation of the Nelson Memo requiring all publications and data from federally-funded research be publicly accessible without an embargo on their free and public release. The letter strongly supports the principles of open science and the importance of freely sharing research results in a timely and equitable manner while also expressing concern about potential unintended consequences of revised public access policies on professional societies and the quality and equity of the research enterprise. coeditor Paul Montagna was also invited to brief congressional staff on this topic.
