BuildLabs has committed more than $200,000 in donated services and materials towards the completion of Ma’s House.

Sustainable practices have been embedded in every step, from factory-finished building components to cellulose insulation, metal roofing and low-disruption construction.

“All products are finished in our climate-controlled factory, resulting in a zero-waste construction process,” BuildLabs cofounder Punit Chugh said. “This approach respects the land, the neighborhood, and Shinnecock value of stewardship.”

Artist Jeremy Dennis began the Ma’s House project in 2020, after returning home during the pandemic. The existing structure, passed down from his grandparents and named in honor of his grandmother, was beloved, yet fragile.

Earlier this year, Jeremy connected with Punit Chugh, cofounder of BuildLabs, to explore the possibility of building a new studio on the property. Architect Peter DePasquale of Garnett.DePasquale had already generously contributed multiple rounds of designs, creating renderings that seamlessly merged contemporary architecture with Indigenous motifs.

BuildLabs’ precision-engineered construction approach proved to be the perfect match.

Welcome to Ma’s House, a community-led art space founded by Shinnecock artist Jeremy Dennis. What began as a personal project during the early pandemic has become one of two BIPOC artist residencies on Indigenous reservation land in the United States.

Now, Ma’s House is entering a new chapter — and BuildLabs is honored to help build it with architect Pete DePasquale.
