Todd Frazier said it best. At 12 years old, the goal isn’t getting scouted. It’s learning the game, building confidence, making mistakes, celebrating wins, and developing a love for baseball that lasts.
And that starts with the coach.

Youth coaches have a responsibility that goes far beyond wins and losses. They’re teaching kids how to compete, how to handle adversity, how to work as a team, and how to get back up after striking out.

WE TALK A LOT ABOUT PLAYER RETENTION.
BUT WHAT ABOUT COACH RETENTION?

Every season, youth leagues work hard to recruit players, build teams, and grow their programs.
But there’s another challenge that deserves just as much attention: keeping great coaches coming back year after year.

Volunteer coaches are the foundation of youth sports. Yet too often, we expect them to step into the role without the training, resources, or ongoing support they need.

And when coaches walk away, leagues lose more than a volunteer. They lose experience, relationships, and continuity for their players.

So here’s a question for youth league leaders:
⚾️🥎What is your organization doing to make coaching an experience people want to return to?
Is it better onboarding? More accessible coaching education? Ready-to-use practice plans? Mentorship? Or simply making the role less overwhelming?

⚾ COACHES: WHAT DO YOU SAY DURING A MOUND VISIT?
When your pitcher is struggling, the last thing they need is a long speech or five mechanical adjustments.
Here’s how to make your next mound visit count:
1️⃣ SLOW THE GAME DOWN. Give your pitcher a moment to breathe, reset, and regain control.

2️⃣ ASK ONE SIMPLE QUESTION. “How are you feeling?” or “What’s not working?” Listen before you start coaching. #
3️⃣ FOCUS ON ONE ADJUSTMENT. Don’t overload them with mechanics. Give them one clear, actionable cue they can execute.

4️⃣ CREATE A PLAN. Talk through the next hitter. What pitch are you attacking with? Where do you want to throw it?

5️⃣ LEAVE THEM WITH CONFIDENCE. “You’ve got this. Trust your stuff. One pitch at a time.”

A great mound visit doesn’t fix the entire inning. It prepares your pitcher to execute the next pitch.

I coach our 11u Team and we had an indoor practice due to the weather. There is so much to teach these guys because they are on the 50/70 field for the first time. Enjoy the process and continue to train them. So much to teach so little time. Fall ball is tough because the season is short. Do what you can do with the time that you have.
