Winter Storm Fern hit over two-thirds of the country with harsh weather, stressing power grids.

While major outages were avoided in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, clean energy proved vital, saving over $2 billion in grid costs.

In PJM Interconnection, just 5% wind and solar generation saved $430 million for 67 million customers across multiple states.

Wind is an emissions-free renewable energy source that has a small environmental impact compared to many other energy sources. Wind turbines generate electricity without emitting pollutants that harm air or water and do not require water for cooling. Additionally, wind energy can reduce reliance on fossil fuels, leading to decreased overall air pollution and carbon dioxide emissions.

Did You Know?
In the 1970s, the price of oil increased which led to a rise in the interest and research of wind turbines and the power they generate. Generous public funding allowed for the National Science Foundation to launch research and development initiatives in these areas. Shortly after, the newly established Energy Research and Development Agency took over management of these programs, forming the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
