In 1987, the MOD-5B was the largest wind turbine operating in the world with a rotor diameter of nearly 100 meters (330 feet) and a rated power of 3.2 megawatts.

Generous public funding allowed for the National Science Foundation to launch research and development initiatives in these areas. Shortly after, the newly established Energy Research and Development Agency took over management of these programs, forming the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
